Chatterjee had shot off a five-page letter criticising party general secretary Prabhas Ghosh for deviating from the party’s ideology by forging an alliance with the Trinamool Congress.
“The party is in a crisis. A communist party like SUCI cannot tie up with the Trinamool,” Chatterjee wrote in the letter adding, “In this situation, I have decided to finish myself.”
Soon after this, he went missing.
The police have now initiated a suo motu inquiry and have interrogated a host of the top SUCI leaders, including Ghosh.
“We have registered a suo motu case in connection with Bidhan Chatterjee going missing after having the letter in our possession,” said Praveen Kumar, the police chief of South 24 Parganas.
Sources in the SUCI said that a section of party’s state-level leaders was against the alliance with the Trinamool, with Chatterjee being one of them.
Meanwhile Ghosh, who is in the eye of the storm said: “I don’t want to comment on the letter. I will help the police to trace Chatterjee.” His colleagues, staying at the commune, have failed to provide any vital information to the police.
