Sachin creates history, breaks Lara’s record

Sachin tendulkar

New Delhi, October 17: The stifling suspense and the prolonged wait finally came to an end as Sachin Tendulkar on Friday emerged as the highest run-accumulator in Test cricket's history, staking a legitimate claim as the best batsman cricket has known since Don Bradman, both aesthetically and statistically.

After his mission incomplete in Bangalore, Tendulkar redeemed himself in Mohali in his 152nd Test and West Indian legend Brian Lara was toppled from the highest Test run-accumulator's pedestal.

Test debutant Peter Siddle sent down the first ball of the post-tea session. Tendulkar glided it to third man for three runs to surpass Lara's record of 11,953 runs and raise the bar even higher for posterity.

Relieved to have achieved the milestone that eluded him in Bangalore, an overwhelmed Tendulkar took the helmet off and looked upwards in a silent prayer and suddenly all the hostility surrounding the Indo-Australian Test series evaporated as Ricky Ponting and his men came to shake hands with him.

Sourav Ganguly walked down from the non-striker's end, patting him on the achievement and firecrackers went off around the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in a pre-Diwali celebration to mark the golden moment in the history of Indian cricket.

Tendulkar arrived here with 11,939 runs against his name from 151 Tests, averaging 54.02 hitting 39 centuries in the process. His ODI record put together-- he tops the run-accumulator's chart there too with 16,361 runs -- Tendulkar has scored more than 25,000 international runs with the help of a mindboggling (42+39) 81 centuries and 138 half-centuries.

And all those runs flowed from the blade of someone who, rather reluctantly, swapped leather-flinging with willow-wielding after a blunt Dennis Lillee told the 12-year-old aspiring fast bowler in a Chennai camp that he had no hopes as a pacer.

Or probably the blame actually lies with Waqar Younis.

Tendulkar was hit on the mouth by Waqar in his debut Test series in Pakistan with dripping blood drenching the shirt of the cuddly teen with curly hair. Nineteen long years since the incident and bowlers around the world continue to bleed even to this day for a folly of one of their predecessors.

Worse, the torment is far from over.

Almost as a matter of revenge, Tendulkar lorded over the bowlers since that 1989 series, eclipsing virtually every batting record and piling on mountain of runs and setting new benchmarks for batsmanship in the process.

Impeccable technique, perfect temperament and unflinching commitment to his craft have made Tendulkar a paragon of all batting virtues and his single-minded determination and an incredible ability to insulate himself from anything unwarranted have only added to his aura.

President congratulates Tendulkar

President Pratibha Patil congratulated Sachin Tendulkar for becoming the highest Test run-getter in the world.

"You have given joy to countless Indians with your batting," the President said in her congratulatory message to the master batsman.

Tendulkar surpassed former West Indian captain Brian Lara's record of 11,953 runs on the opening day of the second cricket Test against Australia in Mohali.

With no real chink in his batting armour, bowling to him is often a trauma for the bowlers, although Shane Warne preferred to call it nightmare.

Equipped with every shot in the book and endowed with the flair to blend routine with recherche, Tendulkar grew in stature with ever game before eventually attaining cult status. Don Bradman anointed him as his heir and euphoric Indians fans deified him.

He did burn his fingers with captaincy before renouncing it but the aura and idolatry remained intact. Unlike others, his name is not debated in selection meetings. They just enquire about his fitness.

Loudmouth opponents like Australia refrain from sledging him, not as a favour but out of fear as it often brings out the best in Tendulkar. Bowlers fancy his scalp and whenever hit for a boundary, considers it comeuppance.

For his legion of fans, Tendulkar has been nothing sort of a messiah. Everytime he walked out in the middle and took guard, he was expected to excel, regardless of opposition, condition and everything else. And on most occasions, Tendulkar did just that and his cult grew.

His impeccable demeanor on and off the field and a childish love for the game have endeared Tendulkar to all, making him a genuine ambassador of the game. With this new feather added to his already well-decorated cap, Tendulkar is now in a league of his own.

PM praises Sachin

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hailed Sachin Tendulkar as a 'genius' after the master batsman eclipsed Brian Lara to become the highest run-getter in Test cricket.

"I congratulate Sachin Tendulkar on becoming the highest run scorer in Test cricket. Sachin is truly worthy of the mantle of the greatest run scorer in Tests. I have been following his cricket and there is no doubt that he is a genius."

Tendulkar surpassed Lara's record to become the highest run getter in Test cricket on the opening day of the second Test against Australia at Mohali.

Tendulkar milestone by Sunder Venkataram on 18 Oct 2008

This praise report on Tendulkar's last milestone in his glittering career is the best that I have read for a long long time. The person who has written this piece is almost as talented as Truman Capote or Norman Mailor. That is, using fictional technique to report a normal event. He or she was not present on the ground when Sachin scored the last runs to beat this record but like Truman and Mailor did, this journalist has also done it. Will someone in the Express please ask this gentleman to write a word in reply to me? I need to know him. I am also a freelance writer and it was such a pleasure reading this piece.

Sachin's achievements by subra on 17 Oct 2008

Heartiest congratulations to the so called little master who is really master blaster and who made us all virtually king of the cricketing world, namely Sachin Tendulkar. I can't believe that he is old and that he achieved the feat which is sung throughout the world. Apart from his match temperament, he is a symbol of true Indian, a man with the coolest temperament and amiable in nature.Rarely, he exihibits his emotions. He is too young to write his autobiography but someone can write how he handles the toughest situations. We want him to be the best always and how could he meet our expectations. But the reality is that he is the largest run maker of the cricketing world and we would welcome the current Australian captain to break the current record and that too in India if possible. I do expect some other Indian to keep the flags high if possible. For the time being, I am the king, thanks to Sachin, the miracle man, if I can call him. How long will he be a little master?

Sachin Tendulkar by jay on 17 Oct 2008

Sir,I always wonder how Sachin with a heavy bat meant for longer armed tall and bigger men like Grame Pollock,Graeme Smith,Clive Lloyd and now Pietersen(the bat in his hands look like a baton) could carry on for ninetten years of test cricket.I also wonder how many more centuries and double centuries he would have made if he got used to a lighter bat.Unfortunately,Sachin sometimes can be obstinate even as he is mild mannered.I am also convinced that most of his injuries over the years came as a result of the effect of a heavy bat on a short body with shorter hands than meant for a heavy bat. Also, with advancing years affecting mobility and agility and ability to adapt/recover,he has fallen to sharply risinf and cutting deliveries recntly. If he uses a lighter bat from now onwards,Sachin may be able to extend his batting life, given his phenomenal talent and discipline.

A Golden Achievement by PRANAVAM RAVIKUMAR on 17 Oct 2008

SACHIN TENDULKAR'S VICTORY WAS NOT HIS ONE DAY EFFORT, BUT IT TOOK DAYS AND DAYS OF HIS CONTINOUS EFFORT FOR WHICH HE SHOULD BE APPRECIATED. THE OTHER TEAM PLAYER'S SHOULD ACQUIRE THIS SPIRIT FROM SACHIN SO THAT WE CAN MAKE MORE AND MORE VICTORIES LIKE THIS.

Sachin creates history, breaks Lara’s record by William D'Souza on 17 Oct 2008

Congratulations Sachin. But you still fall short of expectations. You scored for the sake of scoring. But in cricket what is required is winning games. Records are for keep sake. What ever talk of greatness, bla bla is just doesn't sound good. Time taken, the test innings played is too long. If given chance may be Rahul Dravid will overtake this record in another 5 years ! ! ! ! ! !

RUNS AT COST OF INDIA by DA on 17 Oct 2008

Oh Oh he has made another milestone, maybe his son will open with him and he will still not quit at 60. More and more records he will make at cost of young new players. The BCCI will fit special skates to his shoes so that he can skate and score runs at 60. Politicians dont want to leave the seat, now cricketers donot want to leave their place, what is the use, Last test showed that even this so called great batsman could not chase a meagre total of 200 in 83 over with one full day at his disposal. Wow what a batsman...

Ignorant People by Bharatiya on 17 Oct 2008

I guess most people don't know much about Cricket. Do not compare number of matches, but compare number of innings and average. Sachin took 246 innings compared to Lara's 232, just 14 more innings. Additionally compare the averages; sachin has played with an average of over 54, where as Lara's average is 52. Sachin has remained notout 25 times against Lara's only 6 times. West Indies did not have anybody close to Lara, where India had Dravid and Ganguly. So get your fact straight and stop complaining about the great batsman.

congratulation!! by soumen on 17 Oct 2008

congratulation!!we expect more.........

great cricketer by amaan on 17 Oct 2008

sachin is a gud player.he must continue his form.and he should not take is ritirement for nest 2 to 4 years

sachin-sourav by abcd on 17 Oct 2008

sachin is best batsman of india and sourav is best left handed batsman of india----this is another example of sachin-sourav jugalbandhi.-----whenever sachin creates a world record his partner at the crease is sourav--this happened today also. had sourav not been dropped for more than i year he would have crossed 8000runs.
