New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram

Seeking removal of Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanadan for his remark on the family of slain NSG commando Sandip Unnikrishnan, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said he would ask the CPM leadership to show the door to the communist veteran.

"It is a very serious issue. What the CM has said is absolutely wrong and a great insult to our martyr. I would demand from the CPM Politburo to remove him," Prasad told reporters in New Delhi.

Criticising the CM's remark, Prasad said, "We are also in politics and at times people do not behave properly with us while venting out their anger. But we are in public life and we have to understand the sentiment. The martyr's father was in the state of shock and this should have been understood by the chief minister."

Karat says sorry for 'dog' remark

Responding to Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan’s remarks on late NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s family, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat has clarified that the CM’s comments were regrettable. The CPM boss also added that he had spoken to Chief Minister Achuthanandan on the issue. TV channels reported.

Earlier Achuthanandan refused to apologise for his controversial remark against the family of the slain NSG commando after his unpleasant visit to the latter's house two days back.

On being asked by the media whether he would apologise for his remark, the Chief Minister said, "No, no" before leaving for Hyderabad.

COMRADE'S TRIBUTE: A DOG WON’T VISIT YOUR HOME

Express News Service

The Kerala Government hurt the sentiments of the family of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan by not sending its representative for the funeral of the Malayali NSG commando who died battling terrorists in Mumbai. Its Chief Minister today added insult to that injury when he said, “Even a dog would not have glanced at that house had it not been Sandeep’s residence.”

Sandeep’s father Unnikrishnan had snubbed Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan when they came to his house on Sunday after he repeatedly declined to see them. Sandeep’s father Unnikrishnan was upset that none of the Kerala ministers called or visited to offer condolence while their counterparts in Karnataka did.

So the commando’s father asked them to go back. “I have lost all respect for you, VS,” he said. Later, he clarified that the politicians arrived after he repeatedly said no and admitted that he “responded badly.”

Talking to Times Now, Achuthanandan said: “I have respect for Sandeep, his mother and father. If it had not been Sandeep’s residence, not even a dog would have glanced at the house,” he told the channel. “I did not expect such a reception.” There is widespread outrage among politicians of all shades over the Chief Minister’s comments. BJP state president P K Krishnadas said Achuthandanan has become a disgrace for the state. “VS inflicted wounds on that bereaved family. He should quit the post,” he said. “When People’s Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Madani was acquitted in the Coimbatore serial blast case, three ministers of the Left Government turned up for the reception in Thiruvanananthapuram. The CPM has proved that the party would honour anti-nationals and insult those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation.”

Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said Achuthanandan’s comment is aimed at killing the NSG hero again. “While the entire country is saluting Sandeep’s supreme sacrifice, his home state is insulting him,” he said. A CPI MP from Kerala, who preferred anonymity, said Achuthanandan’s comment on Sandeep’s family was unwarranted. “He has raked up a controversy unnecessarily. It has really embarrassed all of us,” he said.

Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said: “Every Keralite, every Indian, should take pride in his sacrifice. He had embraced death for the nation. Post-death, he should not have been drawn into an unnecessary controversy.”

Maj Unnikrishnan by nila on 02 Dec 2008

Its mindboggling that any Indian would say such thing to family of a man who gave up his life trying to protect us. Even dogs would not say what Achuthanandan said of hero Maj Unnikrishnan. It is equally tragic that he has not been dismissed (he should be dismissed - resignation from office would be too mild.) People of Kerala should send hundreds of dogs to Achuthanandan's home to protest every day.

tolerance by Anil namadeorao Wanode on 02 Dec 2008

Political leadership carries egoism. They are habitual of hospitality. yoga, pranayam should compel them to sanity. communism delivers equal respect to mankind. authorities must remind him tolerence. devotion and dedication is superior than politics. keep body fit and check hygine.

people should be accountable for words and actions by Mangesh on 02 Dec 2008

Whatever the father did or did not do was out of total grief and frustration. A chief minister should have the sense to understand that and should have been magnamious enough in his remarks and actions. This idiot needs to be fired. Unless you Indians start getting people to be accountable and they start loosing their jobs you will never ever get efficency in your country(ex Indian)Mangesh

Insult of Indian Army by Deepak Sharma on 02 Dec 2008

We all know that the biggest enemy of India is Communist Party. They supported Britishers during Quit India Movement. They Supported China during 1962 war, they supported Emergency by Indira Gandhi during 1977. They divided the country on the line of caste and religion. They have no regret to call the Indian solider who sacrificed his life as the Dog. What kind of moral values Karat and his band of rufians have to say. I would highly recommend that Indian Government not only sack Kerala Chief Minister but also slap on him the National Security Act. It is time for fellow Indians to wake up and save the country from the cluthes of Congress and Communists.Jai Hind.

Patriot by Mahesh on 02 Dec 2008

I can't imagine Indian People with no brains at all. How can anybody expect to drop in all politicians and ministers and beauracrats to his house for final ceremony of a patriot. Although, the patriot's death is worthless, is it possible? People think of it before putting your comments.

Dog remark by minister by V. Sreenivas on 02 Dec 2008

It seems that our politicians know how everyone has to behave except themselves. The minister instead of understanding the agony of a father who lost his son has disgraced the family. Such persons do not deserve to be in positions of responsibility. They should be sacked. There are many people to take the place of the dishonarble minister but few to take the place of Unni krishnan who sacrificed his life. The politicians have to be taught a lesson.Oherwise there is no future for India.V. Sreenivas

Achutanadan must go by Anonymous on 02 Dec 2008

Kerala CM is not wrong by Mahesh on 02 Dec 2008

Though it is truth that Unnikrishnan died a death of a soldier and the whole country is paying condolences for it, the whole issue of Kerala CM visiting his house and his dad ill treated him is not acceptable. Unnikrishan was working in NSG and it is primarily his duty to protect the nation. WHile doing his duty, if he dies, it is worthless, but does not mean that all politicians should leave their work and visit his final ceremoney. I dont accept the way Senior Unnikrishnan treated the Kerala CM and I totally agree the Kerala CM not apologizing Senior Unnikrishnan.

our politicians let us down by smitha on 02 Dec 2008

Why blame those terrorists who strike our country when we have such useless politicians ruling us . The wods of the C.M are not only insult to The major's family but also to every indian family. we all should register our strong opposition to such leaders. This shows that he had visited the family not to share their grief but for political intrests only. SHAME ON YOU MR.Achuthanandan

Irresponsible statement by Aparna B on 02 Dec 2008

This is an immature, shallow and derogatory statement by a leader in a responsible position in a democratic country. Instead of understanding the congomeration of grief, sadness and mourning of Sandeep Unnikrishnan's dad who wanted to have some peaceful bereavement time for himself and his family, and respecting his dad's reason for the refusal to meet, this egoistic, shallow hearted CM has just demonstrated how desperate he is to scream aloud that he is the CM! If he would have said that he was sorry to pick up a wrong time and respected Mr. Unnikrishnan's stand to not meet with the CM, people would have still looked upto him as a leader. Our leaders do not understand that a leader cannot be egoistic or think about 'self', and having a big heart is important;having a maturity is important. I blame the people who nominate and choose such leaders. We need a change now.Look at the language that is being used by our elderly politicians these days!Experience is not elegance or expertise.

CM by Savi on 02 Dec 2008

This is exactly the reason why we as a country can get no where in the world, we have no professionalism whatever. This idiot whatever the CM's name is, is a complete donkey to be sooo insensitive. Come on, apoligise and get over with it. Sandeep is a hero and his parents deserves so much respect for having sacrificed for the country's benefit. Our politician's ego is all that matters. I have to say it is people like this that make us ashamed to be in this country. On the other hand it is people like Sandeep and all the other who sacrificed their lives fighting the terrorists, make us proud also. Man, what have we become, power hungry , money loving, greedy goons.
