New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram

Seeking removal of Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanadan for his remark on the family of slain NSG commando Sandip Unnikrishnan, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said he would ask the CPM leadership to show the door to the communist veteran.

"It is a very serious issue. What the CM has said is absolutely wrong and a great insult to our martyr. I would demand from the CPM Politburo to remove him," Prasad told reporters in New Delhi.

Criticising the CM's remark, Prasad said, "We are also in politics and at times people do not behave properly with us while venting out their anger. But we are in public life and we have to understand the sentiment. The martyr's father was in the state of shock and this should have been understood by the chief minister."

Karat says sorry for 'dog' remark

Responding to Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan’s remarks on late NSG commando Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s family, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat has clarified that the CM’s comments were regrettable. The CPM boss also added that he had spoken to Chief Minister Achuthanandan on the issue. TV channels reported.

Earlier Achuthanandan refused to apologise for his controversial remark against the family of the slain NSG commando after his unpleasant visit to the latter's house two days back.

On being asked by the media whether he would apologise for his remark, the Chief Minister said, "No, no" before leaving for Hyderabad.

COMRADE'S TRIBUTE: A DOG WON’T VISIT YOUR HOME

Express News Service

The Kerala Government hurt the sentiments of the family of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan by not sending its representative for the funeral of the Malayali NSG commando who died battling terrorists in Mumbai. Its Chief Minister today added insult to that injury when he said, “Even a dog would not have glanced at that house had it not been Sandeep’s residence.”

Sandeep’s father Unnikrishnan had snubbed Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan when they came to his house on Sunday after he repeatedly declined to see them. Sandeep’s father Unnikrishnan was upset that none of the Kerala ministers called or visited to offer condolence while their counterparts in Karnataka did.

So the commando’s father asked them to go back. “I have lost all respect for you, VS,” he said. Later, he clarified that the politicians arrived after he repeatedly said no and admitted that he “responded badly.”

Talking to Times Now, Achuthanandan said: “I have respect for Sandeep, his mother and father. If it had not been Sandeep’s residence, not even a dog would have glanced at the house,” he told the channel. “I did not expect such a reception.” There is widespread outrage among politicians of all shades over the Chief Minister’s comments. BJP state president P K Krishnadas said Achuthandanan has become a disgrace for the state. “VS inflicted wounds on that bereaved family. He should quit the post,” he said. “When People’s Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Madani was acquitted in the Coimbatore serial blast case, three ministers of the Left Government turned up for the reception in Thiruvanananthapuram. The CPM has proved that the party would honour anti-nationals and insult those who have sacrificed their lives for the nation.”

Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said Achuthanandan’s comment is aimed at killing the NSG hero again. “While the entire country is saluting Sandeep’s supreme sacrifice, his home state is insulting him,” he said. A CPI MP from Kerala, who preferred anonymity, said Achuthanandan’s comment on Sandeep’s family was unwarranted. “He has raked up a controversy unnecessarily. It has really embarrassed all of us,” he said.

Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said: “Every Keralite, every Indian, should take pride in his sacrifice. He had embraced death for the nation. Post-death, he should not have been drawn into an unnecessary controversy.”

Remarks of VS Achutanandan by bijoy kumar roy on 02 Dec 2008

After the Mumbai attack, people in general has completely lost faith on the politician. But VS's remarks has further damaged the image of politician. If the situation goes like this way, people would hate democracy very soon. At this juncture, India need a strong leader with constitutional power like the USA, then only India can survive. Since 1948 Indian political leadership is trying to establish itself as a soft, weak and tolerant state. This ideology is no longer safe for the existence of Indian state.

VS is a good leader by Divya on 02 Dec 2008

I am from Kerala and I respect our Chief Minister.I believe that Sandeep's father was equally disrespectful to the CM .CM should not apologize until he gets an apology from Sandeep's father. He was a representative of the entire Kerala population and went to pay homage on behalf of all of us.He was disrespected and we did not like it.The media will anyway try to make a big deal of nothing since they want something sensational all the time. But I am telling you guys, this CM is a people's man .

Commenting politicans by suresh on 02 Dec 2008

Chief Ministers are treated above human par that they loose sense when in power. hence such talks... true they behave badly in many more occassion never picked up by the media.. the voice of people are always killed. Most politicians are deservingly of the dog family....will not be cared of the dog kind... unless the emocracy roulette throws up them in power.

Kerala CM comment by Rafeek on 02 Dec 2008

It is true Mr. Achuthanandhan had some bad experience at Saneep house from his father. His reaction towards CM was really shocking since it is true he lost his son but he should control himself. Another thing there is a usage in Kerala “my dog wouldn’t go”. When it translate to English or other regional Indian languages it may misunderstood? Actually Kerala CM didn’t insult Saneep or anybody but it widely misunderstood.

Even people in the mental asylum will have more sense than Achutanandan. He with his excessive stupidity will even make the mental hospital doctor go mad. But please do not leave him out on the streets or he will bite someone.

Kerala CM justified on his comments by Gopakumar on 02 Dec 2008

What was wrong with Mr.Unnikrishnan when VS visited his house to convey the state’s condolences? Why did he act so funny and insulted the CM who is also a respected politician in Kerala? VS has not said anything insulting Major Sandeep's family. He meant 'Nobody would have bothered to go that side if it is not Major Sandeep's family'. People responding furiously here should understand what exactly happened before responding...

Kerala CM's 'dog' remarks regrettable: Karat by a vijayakrishnan on 02 Dec 2008

It is not just regrettable that VS Achuthanandan could not see beyond the damage to his own ego caused by this incident. This is from the Chief Minister who has to keep the welfare of each and every one of the subjects of the state above all other considerations, even to the point of sufferring minor slights to his, often inflated, ego. Though I understand he might have have been reluctant to go for the funeral because of media compulsions alone, his subsequent comments have caused disrepute to the government and people of Kerala.

pliticians and babus by M K Keswani on 02 Dec 2008

The less said about Left leaders is better. So long they were confined to Kolkata and Kerala, we did not know much about them. But having come to center, Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechuri their true colors are visible. They do not want to see India progress and now their CM is exposed that they do not have respect for fallen hero's families. But the Mumbai terror has exposed the complete political class irrespective of party they belong to. Except few leaders you can count them on fingers rest all are interested only in POWER. And that is true for the babus who are running the show. Since the leaders are weak, they too have become sluggish and have taken everything including national security for granted. While we all want to rewarded for the duty we do (for which we are paid as well) we are not prepared to take any punishment for our failures.

Dogs are man's best friends. No one can say the same for present breed of politicians including Achuthanandan.

Irresponsible statements of Kerela CM by Amitav Nayak on 02 Dec 2008

Yes you are right, not only he is idiot but also stupid to say such a bad comment towards the family of Mr.Unnikrishnan who deserves Great Respect and care from all the fellow INDIAN'S. It is Mr.Unnikrishnan's family who is now in great loss after loosing his only son, even any father would have done the same thing what he did as the politicians are playing the Sympathy game just for the vote bank politics. If V.S. Achuthanandhan, Chief Minister of Kerala, has so much respect towards the family then he should have became silent and leave the place as a gentleman keeping in mind the condition of the lonely father. Shame on you Mr. Achuthanandhan as a dog is even more faithfully towards his/her master than you towards the country and its fellow citizen.

Kerala CM by BP on 02 Dec 2008

SHOW RESPECT BY THROWING HIM OUT. Achutanandan has become filthy in the eyes of the public.Nothing short of his being thrown out of chiefministership will be tolerated.

How dare? by Arun B on 02 Dec 2008

Someone please remind the Mr. VS Achuthanandan, that even before the slain commando Sandeep joined army, Sandeep's parents possessed more value in this society than Mr. VS Achuthanandan who at that time, was day-dreaming of putting his dirty hands into Kerala's treasury. There is no comparison between the glorious family of Major Sandeep who had acheived everything in life through sheer hardwork and dedication, and the school drop-out VS Achuthanandan who with some cheesy political exposure, became the CM of a state and had done no good for the state till now. Mr. Achuthanandan has the inferiority complex of getting thrown out of a home despite being the CM, which overtook his mental equilibrium, and led him to say something which no sensible politician would have said. This has to be dealt with serious concern and proper mental treatment should be given to the CM.

NSG Rule by Sanjay V. Iyer on 02 Dec 2008

according to me india should take strigent action against pak. it is time that india should go on war against pak. too much have we suferred b'coz of them. the maharashtra police force should be be given special commondo tranning like the NSG. the govt should impose governer's rule in the state of maharashtra (i.e. NSG rule). the expenses for the same should be incurred out of the 60 cr. funds.

Dog remarks. by Varghese Joseph on 02 Dec 2008

We are sad to hear such statements from our CM, who occupies an important post in the state and that person how he dares to make such a statement. We the citizens and the people of the state asks the same CM whoi has given him such a liscence to say? Does he thinks that just because he is from a party called CPI(M) he can talk and say in any way? What wrong have the deceased family and their father do? As CM of Kerala, he has done all the wrong in his part. Certain thinks that has to be expressed in the right time, right place have to be done and should not be forgotten, he(CM) forgot and now this part he denies and now is playing the trick. This, all the people understands. CM do not forget that.

shame on politicians by Sakira on 02 Dec 2008

dear achyutanandan, but for the fact you are the chief minister, people give respct to you . had you not been a chief minister, remember, a dog also would not have looked at you. Shame on you and your breed of politicians. Shame on you for your shameless attitude.

Insult and abuses by venkateswaran CV on 02 Dec 2008

While one appreciates the anguish of the slain hero's family, the hostile reception was uncultured. Major Unnikrishnan's father could have politely expressed his dissent to the Kerala CM in much more dignified manner rather than stoutly refusing to see him, The reaction of the CM is again disgraceful but one should consider the ignominy inflicted on him by an individual just because he happened to be the father of the slain Major. Any other moral would have been crucified

Achutanandan is a moron. by Sanjoy Gupta on 02 Dec 2008

Why, does the CM think he is of a dog's level? He should apologise to all dogs.

Thanks to Mr. Karat by R.Ramachandran on 02 Dec 2008

Sir, I really appreciate Mr. Karat for stating that CM’s comments were regrettable. Yesterday, Mr. Sitaram Yechuri was evasive and dodging the media as though he was unaware of the controversy. Similarly Mr. D.Raja of CPI also feigned ignorance about the issue. Amidst such cowards, who are otherwise very vociferous in protesting, it is heartening to note that at least Mr. Karat was honest enough to admit the mistake. As for the CM's comment, yes such DOGs approach the citizens (leave alone Martyrs's house) only when they need bones in the form of VOTE otherwise such unfaithful dogs won't even give a look up. A TRUE STATEMENT.
