Chandigarh, March 10: Olympian Gagan Ajit Singh on Monday blamed the Indian Hockey Federation for the country’s failure to qualify for the Olympics.

On India’s 2-0 defeat to Great Britain in the final of the Olympic qualifiers, Gagan said, “it is the saddest day for Indian hockey. The IHF top brass, including its President and Coach, should step down immediately and pave way for fresh people.” He said the team’s failure to qualify for the Olympics after 80 years was not just a “national shame”, but a great disappointment for “world hockey as well”.

“It’s a loss for world hockey as others want India to do well and be there,” he said.

He said it was beyond his comprehension why players like him, Len Aiyappa, Sandeep Singh and Deepak Thakur, who played well in the Premier Hockey League (PHL), were ignored by the selectors.

“The English team had earlier gone on record saying they fear Sandeep Singh, who would have been an asset if he had played. Other players who were doing really well were not even considered,” he regretted.

Mockery of Indian Hockey by bharat on 11 Mar 2008

its a real shame for all of us not to qualify for Beijing 2008 Olympics. Its a culmination of the deeds of past few years. Its appreciation on part of media to highlight the same.Further amazing is how bankrupt

Hockey is history by Manohar on 11 Mar 2008

I can't figure out why so much fuss over this loss. Just look at the archives of Indian hockey since 1970. India has never been a winning team since the 1970's. This is nothing new. India is not good in hockey anymore. Maybe its time Indians took interest in soccer and other sports instead. Even if India had qualified they would have finished last, meaning 12th among the 12 countries to qualify. There is no use blaming individual players. They are not physically strong to tackle their opponents. India has become too mediocre to play International hockey games. It is amazing how people still hope India to win a medal in hockey. Those days are long gone.

Shame to gill and sports ministry by Beerun on 11 Mar 2008

Dear Munaf,Only saying chak de India and team is ok...jo jita wohi sikander doesn't make yur words worthy. It's not a matter of joke. Its teh question of national pride and honour. Which was put on risk by these almost dead federation and its dead officials. Gagan is right ins aying that . i saw muself sandeep is playign in PHl and he has the planty of goals in his basket from PHL. then why he was dropped. Gill has no answer becoz he can't see more than 5 meters. His eyes has stopped looking beyond 5 meters. He belives what Jothi says and some of his persoanl security staff wants to make him do. Most of the people don't know that Gill when he was the DGP of panjab police he cleared the militancy from Punjab. But we only know that the militency was cleared, infact he killed thousands of innocent people of punjab just to make his tenure as DGP to last more and the glorify his name. He killed lot of innocent farmers and showed them as militants. In sam eway he did with hockey he ignored the good players and best players who should hav ebeen in the team. And he took his team seelcted by jyothi and his personal staff. And the most shame ful thing came from Indian sports minister. He said ministry cant do anything in the work of Federation. all these parasites have made there mind to kill hockey want it to be remembered in history only.. Shame to Mr. Iyer, Gill, Joythi kumar, Carwalho and all those there at IHF.

indian hockey by sanatanpandya on 11 Mar 2008

India failed to qualify after 80 years. Thanks to 80 years old KPS Gill, the dictator who finished not only the indian Hockey but all senior and budding players whom he saw as a threat to his 14 year old empire.A white paper on hockey debacle may bring out bitter facts on the alleged conspiracy by Mr Gill to finish Indian Hockey.

Chaka chak De by Sagar on 11 Mar 2008

Put these scondrols in jail by Sanjay on 10 Mar 2008

A country full of scondrols are too busy looting to pay attention to national issues. We used to have a long history of gold medals in hockey, except the Coolie raj does not like victory.

Bad expectations by Rama on 10 Mar 2008

Now Why didnt Sharukh Khan - who is planning on getting a promo add for his cricket team - buy/support the Indian Hockey team with some money? It just goes to show how pathetic the IHF is in marketing the game (our national game mind you). Why did we have expectations that India will qualify?

Gone Case by BR Natarajan on 10 Mar 2008

The coach should have arranged for a special screening of the Bollywood hit film Chak De to the players.

Hokey loss and Gagan Ajit Singh by jks on 10 Mar 2008

Hockey is in Fundamental crisis. There are not many good talents. Gagan Ajit Singh is telling a crap. He would not have made any difference if he were there in the team.
