Udupi (Karnataka) A Kannada film director claimed his attempts to install a statue of legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin for the shoot of a movie have met with resistance from an unidentified Hindu group on the ground that the actor was a Christian.

The attempt to install the 67-foot statue at the Ottinene beach in Kundapur Taluk of Karnataka ran into rough weather as activists claiming to represent a Hindu group halted the work, Hemanth Hegde, director of Kannada Film "Houseful", told reporters but refused to blame any outfit.

Udupi District Deputy Commissioner Hemalatha said that permission for film shooting has been given but the director has been asked to submit details of the land on which the statue is proposed to be erected and also for scrutiny of adherence to laws including Coastal Regulation Act Hemalatha said authorities cannot give permission to such ventures without verifying land records and the director had not purchased the land where he wanted to erect Chaplin's statue.

Hegde said he planned to shoot two song sequences of his film using the statue, work on which was expected to be completed by April five.

This is the second time the project is facing problems, he claimed but refused to identify the group, adding " I don't want to name anyone that they belong to Bajrang Dal or any other organisation".

Hegde claimed those opposed to the statue first said it would affect the Someshwara Temple but later argued 'Chaplin is a Christian and his contribution to India is nil.'

Cahplin Statue by Kishore on 16 Mar 2009

Mr Hedge is just looking to get publicity for his movie going. Blame Hindutva and the entire English press will pick up the story and give Mr Hedge all the publicity he needs. Seems a bit silly to erect a 67 foot statue when it can be done much cheaper using computer graphics these days.

Charlie chaplin in front of temple by Vinay on 15 Mar 2009

Charlie Chaplin statue right in front of a temple and taller than temple? I can never imagine this happening in US where I live. If locals have objections, isn't this what democrasy is about. Just because someone comes up with crazy idea doesn't mean we have to take it. Why is IE making this look Hindus issues? Isn't this filmmaker trying shove silly idea on the locals. When will IE start acting as Indian media as opposed to being voice for the West.

Saffron by Pigpen on 15 Mar 2009

What a bunch of ignorant fools!! No wonder they're not identifying themselves! Shame on the local administration and the state political setup.

First Lets see facts as they would have been checked in Delhi or Andhra Pradesh or a Coastal state by Rajendra Gupta on 15 Mar 2009

Firstly, is it permitted to errect statues (67 ft tall ) ( be it any one ) on the coasts or coastal belt land ?Is the land where it is going to be errected belong to the Director of the film ?If not then who is the owner ? Does the errection of statue has his permission ? Is the Director trying to create a controversy so as to make the film controversial so as to ensure popularity of the project ? Will the statue so errected will be permanent or temporary ? If permanent , then does it have the permission required as would be required for a 67 ft tall statue on coastal belt land even if it was a statue of Govind Vallabh Pant ?If all above queries can not be simply and logically addressed then why this news has made it to the front page of the web page of IE ? Just because there is a mention of a HIndu group , that too not verified ??

what freedom is being a slave for western culture forced on us by lohit on 15 Mar 2009

when this person has no contribution why should he be idolised, in bharat we do not have statues of vivekananda, savarkar, bhagat singh in most states from where did this chaplin drop from. Enough of westernisation of bharat and being slaves of Macullay system its time to review the policies erected by british and congress at their will during and after freedom.

Charlie Chaplin by P L Selva Mani on 15 Mar 2009

Karnataka Voters by Satish Haldankar on 15 Mar 2009

One wonders if the voters in Karnataka at large regret giving a mandate to BJP, which is hell bent to make the state another 'Hindutva' laboratory.

Karnataka savages Vs Christians by Hero Vaz on 15 Mar 2009

Sonia Gandhi is a Christian. Will the Karnataka savages attack her if she visits Karnataka? What the ignorant savages don't know is that Indian Christians and Christian instiutions have contributed, greatly, to giving quality and character to India.

Installing statues of people need to be discouraged by Arun on 14 Mar 2009

Chaplin statue SHOULD NOT BE INSTALLED in a public area not because of his religion but most of them consider him as controversial figure. No doubt he is a good actor of his times. But allowing a non-indian status would encourage others to install statues of Lenin, Stalin, Saddam, Hitler and even Osama in public places. If people want a statue of Chaplin they can have it in their own studio or in their own home but NOT IN A PLACE WHERE IT IS VISIBLE TO PUBLIC (YES, Statue visible to Public from a Private area is considered as Statue installed in Public place). Our leaders (particularly Congress party) put Our Father of Nation to SHAME by installing Gandhiji's statues (against his wishes) all across the nation over the years. This encouraged other parties to install statues of their own "late" political heads. But now-a-days it became a fashion for political leaders to put their own statues while they are ALIVE. Its a shame. Hence installing any status should be discouraged.
