Saina moves up to world number 9

Mumbai Her face-offs and fighting losses against tougher opponents in recent days notwithstanding, Saina Nehwal moved up in the rankings to hit a single-digit position on the charts for the first time on Thursday, when the new set of rankings were released. Nehwal climbed up a step to No 9 at the expense of Germany’s veteran Huaiwen Xu. Nehwal, who didn’t have many points to defend at the All England, inched ahead three months after she first debuted on the Top 10 list in early December.

Bhat stretches Dan

Playing his opener against All-England champion Lin Dan late on Wednesday at the Swiss Open Super Series in Basel, Aravind Bhat took a game off the Chinese Olympic gold medallist before going down 19-21 21-17 21-16.

Chetan Anand beat No 8 seed Poland’s Wacha Przemyslaw. Ranked four spots above Anand in the world, the Pole lost 21-9 21-16. Anup Sridhar lost to Jan Jorgensen 20-22 21-10 21-13. Nehwal started with a 21-6 21-17 win over Youn Joo Bae.
