Salim ends Poddar’s dream run

Kolkata, March 26 Md Shaharyar Salim of Jamshedpur halted the dream run of Aayush Poddar in the quarter-finals of the Infocus Technologies AITA Talent Series Tennis Championship 2008 being played on the grass courts of the High Court Club today.

In the Boys’ Singles Under-12, Salim beat Aayush 7-5, 6-2. Top seed of the event, Andhra Pradesh’s Arjun Patnaik, was ousted by eighth seed local Md Kamran Ali in three tough sets. Kamran came back from behind to take the next two sets at tie-break. Kamran won 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-0).

In the Boys’ Singles Under 16 third seed Sattwik Sinha Ray of Kolkata was beaten by compatriot Shukrit Guha 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Yesterday Shukrit had beaten fourth seed Subhoraj Ghosh.

In the Girls’ matches top seed Srijita Ghosh marched on relentlessly to win both her Under 12 and Under 16 matches. In the Under 12 match Srijita whitewashed Priyam Periwal 6-0,6-0 while in the Under 16 she defeated Preyanshi Jain 6-0,6-2 to reach the semis. Others to complete the semi finals line up in the Under 12 category are Protiksha Sharma of Assam, Victoria Chahal of Haryana and Mehak Sekhani of Kolkata.
