Kolkata, February 22 The Calcutta High Court on Friday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) questioning the state government’s decision to hold the Kolkata Book Fair, 2008, at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Dismissing the PIL, a division bench of Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose said that the petitioner, advocate Tapash Kumar Chatterjee, has no right to file such a PIL and that it was not maintainable. The Bench said that the reasons cited in the petition for challenging the government’s February 9 decision had no legal foundation.

The Chief Justice also reminded the petitioner that the court had stopped the fair from being held at the Park Circus Maidan for a different reason.

Following this, the state governnment had announced in February through a notification that the fair will be held at Salt Lake Stadium from March 1. The transport and sports departments will organise the fair with the active participation of the Publishers and Booksellers Guild.

Moving the plea on Thursday, Chatterjee wondered how the state government could organise such a fair without discussing the matter in the Cabinet. The state Cabinet had not approved the decision to hold the fair at Salt Lake Stadium, he added.

He also pointed out that the stadium is the state government property and is meant for sports events only.

Chatterjee also told the court that the state sports department had not allowed the Indian Football Federation (IFA) to hold the IFA Shield at the stadium in March only because it coincided with the book fair.

ENGLISH LITERATURE by umesh prasad singh on 13 Feb 2010

Calcutta book Fair resembles the epitome of art and glory of ancient glory in a fundamental manner and content to a highest degree of knowledge nuance and creativity. This is what I feel personally visualising the fair since many years in Calcutta during my college and calcutta university education .Calcutta has every reason to be proud of its rich tradition and glory in realism in all possible ways. I would like to end my comment by quoting SWAMI VIVEKANANDA-EDUCATION IS THE MANIFESTATION OF THE PERFECTION WHICH IS ALREADY IN MAN-IS THEME OF CALCUTTA BOOK FAIR PERFORMED EVERY YEAR WITH FULLEST INSPIRATION.
