After making an impressive debut with Maula in Contract, Sana, Bollywood lyricist Mehboob's daughter is turning a full-fledged music composer with Ram Gopal Varma's next project.

She says, “My father started out with Ramu in Rangeela. So it's great that I got to begin my career with him too. In fact, I had composed Maula for the next film but Ramu decided to use it for Contract. The new movie will be have a blend of contemporary Indian and Western music—romantic and hip-hop numbers.”

The lyrics have been written by father Mehboob. Sana says, “This doesn't imply that I will compose music only for my father's work. I want to work with others as well.”

The 18-year-old has bid adieu to formal education to take a plunge. It was a well-calculated step, Sana maintains. Sana has learnt classical Hindustani music from noted vocalist Ustad Sultan Khan, synthesizer and piano at Trinity College, London.

She has accompanied AR Rahman's troupe around the globe as a vocalist. “It was a great learning experience —understanding the international audience's music preferences and their interest in Bollywood music. Working with Rahman was quite enriching. He advised me to get my technical basics of recording and composing right,” she says.

Unlike other singers who seek fame by cutting albums, Sana wishes to concentrate solely on Bollywood. She says, “Many wish to become like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. But I want to focus only on doing good music in Bollywood. This is why I have not taken up offers from the TV and ad world.”
