Lucknow Making his political debut as the Samajwadi Party candidate for the Lucknow Parliamentary constituency, Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt virtually launched his election campaign with a roadshow in Lucknow amidst much fanfare and other SP leaders and celebrities in tow.

Arriving in Lucknow for the first time after his candidature was announced, the actor started at the head of a procession flanked by wife Manyata, SP General Secretary Amar Singh, MP Jaya Bachchan and Bhojpuri singer and actor Manoj Tiwari, who too is aspiring to enter the Lok Sabha on the party ticket from Gorakhpur.

"Mai yahan logon ko pyar karne aya hun aur pyar lene aya hun. Log mujhe jaadu ki jhappi dein" (I am here to love people and seek their love. People here shoud give me a magic hug), Dutt told reporters.

Clad in white kurta-payjama and Nehru vest, Dutt said that he was eager to work for the people of the city even as opposition parties have launched a veiled campaign to paint the "reel-life hero" as a "real-life villian" by highlighting his conviction in a 15-year-old Arms Act case for possessing an AK-47 rifle.

Dutt, who confirmed only yesterday that he would indeed contest the coming polls as an SP candidate after his sister had expressed disappointment at his decision to join a party other than Congress, is considered a "strong candidate" by other contenders for the seat.

The actor is expected to announce his future plans when he meets the press later in the day.

Sanjay Dutt gets rousing welcome in Lucknow by mehtarajkumar on 21 Jan 2009

SIR-I have to say only that SANJU BABA must not say any thing against his sister. He must not forget that time when he was in Jailand it was his sister who worked vigorously for his release. She met the UPS cahirperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and it was she who worked for SANJU BABA's release. According to the law ofland she has every right to retain her identity as "DUT'S" He is at liberty to joing any political pary or his is independent to make his own decision and can chart his own future but he must remember that she her sister was behing him when he needed most outside help. With regards

Sanjay's welcome at Lucknow. by Mahesh Chaturvedi on 20 Jan 2009

If it is genuine, it is an indication of a total absence of understanding of our legal system, and only God can help such a people.

Out on bail ? by K.Suresh on 19 Jan 2009

How is it that when a celebrity is involved it takes for law to take 'its own course' ? And when , at last, judgement is given, is he going to be out on bail FOR EVER ? Law, in India, is not the same for everybody.

Sanjay Dutt by Deepak Yadav on 19 Jan 2009

Are idiot just look how much work has Modi

Sanjay Dutt SP candidate by nazirmo on 19 Jan 2009

Perhaps Sanjay Dutt has reformed and is a new person. He may have made mistakes in the past. However what I don't like is the fact that he chose to contest as a SP candidate when his father was a true diehard Congress person and his loyalty for the party wavered not once in his lifetime. If Sunil Dutt were alive I wonder what he would think about his son's choice.

Sanjay should Avoid Politics by Aamir Malik on 18 Jan 2009

Sunjay Dutt by Babu on 18 Jan 2009

If Modi can become the chief minister of Gujrat, Advani the deputy prime minister of India, why can't Sunjay Dutt become a MP. Sanjay has killed only 300. Modi and Advani have killed thousands of Indians.

Reply by Babu by Subramanian on 21 Jan 2009

Mr. Babu message I read I think Mr. babu is not an india, You abuse Mr.Advani and Mr. Modi like person, First take look a vibrant Gujarat not like kerala or any other state. No doubt Mr. Modi will be soon our 110 crore people prime minister.

only 300? huh by manojk on 19 Jan 2009

Well... Sanjay can plan with Pakistan and Dawood to kill thousands of Indians. May be a father or mother or brother or sister of the killed ones can answer you. Hopefully your loved ones are not in that list you crazy wacko! This is the state of India. Crooks like you want to support everyone who will work with smugglers and jihadis and crazy pakis to kill Indians.

Goons galore by Ganesh on 18 Jan 2009

Once upon a time, the chambal dacoits were the favourites with SP.Besides many small time dacoits even Phulan devi made it to the parliament. Now there are enough goons available in our cities and villages and so it harvest time for SP.I wonder how the likes of Amitabh and Jaya are patrons to this anti national outfit.

sanjay dutt given welcome in lukhnow by Harry on 18 Jan 2009

What do you expect from a country, which kept electing incompetent political dynasty to power. Samajawadi party is for and by the criminals.

CAn't pardon Sanjay by Sumanyu on 18 Jan 2009

Any amount of Munnabhai attitude can't wash away the sins of Sanjay Dutt. He was in league with India's enemy no 1, Dawood Ibrahim and it can't be pardoned.

Send a maniac for a maniac by SP on 18 Jan 2009

No my dear countrymen, Although he has made lot of efforts but all invain. Give him a chance. He infact is the right person as he has been with them, he know who the links are he knows how it works.Make him the nawab but dont give him the decision making person.

Easy way to escape conviction by venkat on 18 Jan 2009

Samajwadi Party will have no hesitation in nominating Afzal Guru as well to contest for Loksabha if he also can play a role of Mahatma Gandhi or any other freedom foghter in a film. These roles played by convicts washes away the sins they would have committed according to the congress and the Samajwadi party

TERROR IN LUCKNOW !!! by ANIYAN on 18 Jan 2009

IT IS SAD THAT LUCKNOW, FOR LONG REPRESENTED BY RESPECTED POLITICIANS OF CREDIBILITY HAS BEEN THROWN TO TERRORIST LIKE SANJAY DUTT TO CONTEST. HE IS SET TO LOOSE THE DEPOSIT MONEY, IN A 4 CORNERED CONTEST.

SP's candidate from Lucknow by S.Madhavan on 18 Jan 2009

The democracy we practice in India is stupid and dumb.Success is measured only by the number of votes and they come for all other reasons but competence. It will not be a surprise if this immature fellow gets elected .

Sanjay Dutt by Dinesh on 18 Jan 2009

Dear Sir, I agree that he is a low IQ idiot, but was most likely blackmailed into storing arms for Dawood - more because of his foolishness rather than beliefs. In principle, I support the entry of people of other fields into politics. My humble opinion is that it is the 'professional politicians' who do not know/have any other means of livelihood except 'politics or extortion' are the bane for the country.

Sanjay Dutt by Dharamdatt on 18 Jan 2009

As my nana used to say in Guyana, what kind of people lived in a country, that is the kind of leader they will get.

Serve your country.. by AG on 18 Jan 2009

deplorable by Ram Tej Bahadur on 18 Jan 2009

We are watching history repeat itself. This is exaclty how outsiders invaded and occupied this region over an over again. This terrorist is financed and controlled by the gangs from across the border and SP is not the only party. Everyone of the political parties and politicians are bought out by anti- and non-Indians outside the country. The news, media, bollywood, food business, airlines.....you name it. It is total corruption and if Indians do not realize that will certainly get what they deserve. Foreign religions and groups controlling India totally. Already these groups have successfully broke the INDIAN mainstream and made it voiceless. Vote for only those that will cater to the majority of INDIANS!! Jai Bharat Mata ki!!

Amar Singh by Alexander on 18 Jan 2009

What a pity, I feel so sorry for India. People like Amar Singh can make anyone anything for their personal interests. Sanjay Dutt is a mere pawn, he loves to be a pawn, be it Dawood or Amr Singh.

Sanjay Dutt by Nabeel Kareem on 18 Jan 2009

Sanjay Dutt is a man with guts and does not follow the party line. I am returning home to India to do whatever is necessary to help Sanjay get elected.

Next secular step to bring misguided youth like Dutt should be to give tickets to SIMI by shameless indian secular hindu on 18 Jan 2009

Amar Mullayyam Sing Ameetab Bakhan Abuu Azzme Joya Bakhan Aishwhoerya Rai have taken a visionary secular step to bring misguided Muxlim youth to the mainstream by giving ex Dawood and Mumbai blast conspirator Dutt a ticket. They should also now show love and bring all the banned SIMI brothers into mainstream by making them minister Police Army etc. They have now got to hide in lovely country Paxitan due to unnsecularism in India. Mullayamyam must himself go on his hand and feet to brother Dawood and ISI and ask them to contest in India on SP ticket. By giving brother Muxlim 100% reservation in tickets, he can create a truly secular India that our founding fathers Gandhi Nehru Maulana Ambedkar dreamt.
