Washington America's most celebrated health correspondent Indian-American Dr Sanjay Gupta has withdrawn his name from being considered as the Surgeon General of the United States in the Obama Administration.

"This is more about my family and my surgical career," 39-year-old Gupta told CNN's 'Larry King Live'. Gupta is the chief medical correspondent of the CNN.

Some two months ago, CNN had reported that the US President Barack Obama had offered Gupta the position of US Surgeon General. Gupta was actively considering it, the CNN reported.

Gupta told the CNN that he would have had to give up his career in medicine and would also have to stay away from his family for this high-pressure government job. His wife is expecting their third child.

"I think, for me, it really came down to a sense of timing more than anything else," Gupta said, adding, "I just didn't feel I should do that now."

While, he had not been formally nominated for the job, Gupta said senior officials of the Obama Administration have told him that he was their first choice. Gupta is based in Atlanta.
