New Delhi, March 19: Indian national Sarabjit Singh, on death row in Pakistan, on Wednesday got a reprieve as his execution was stayed till April 30.

Giving this information in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government was continuing efforts to save him.

Mukherjee said the Indian High Commission in Islamabad has been informed by Pakistan Foreign Office that President Pervez Musharraf has stayed the execution of Sarabjit Singh by a month, till April 30.

Sarabjit, who has been accused of involvement in bomb blasts, was to be hanged on April 1.

"Government of India is continuing its efforts to save the life of Sarabjit Singh. We have achieved partial success and we will continue to carry on our efforts," Mukherjee said.

Sarabjit's daughter says she will seek pardon for him

Daughter of Sarabjit Singh, whose execution has been stayed by a month in Pakistan, on Wednesday said she would utilise the time to help get a pardon for her father lodged in a Lahore jail.

Somewhat relieved after Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf stayed the hanging scheduled for April 1, Swapandeep, a teenager, said "I am hopeful that in the way they have delayed the punishment, my father will get pardon and he will return to us soon.

"First of all, we want visa (to go to Pakistan) so that we can do something on our own...and present whatever documents are there to prove my father's innocence," she was quoted as saying.

Swapandeep, who had on Tuesday made a fervent appeal to Pakistani authorities for his release, said she would utilize the month's time to seek pardon for him from Musharraf.

Sarabjit was sentenced to death for alleged involvement in the 1990 bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan that claimed 14 lives.

Investigation Discrimination by Sunny on 20 Mar 2008

With regard to Afzal and Sarabjit all that I can say is that political parties are again playing their dirty games with peoples lives. Whichever way it goes one party or the other will benefit.I would like to highlight something else.Iam an Indian. When a British girl dies in Goa, there is such a huge reporting of the news by all media and calls for investigation are made and the guilty caught. When a Pakistan cricket fan is killed in India, no one is even bothered to call for an investigation. Tomorrow if an Indian cricket fan is killed in Pakistan, would we be happy if the dead body is returned and no investigation conducted. The guilty people are free and this sort of attitude would encourage them to repeat these acts in future as well. News channels are equally responsible for not investigating the cause of the Pakistan cricket fans death. This just shows that the life of a White Britisher is more important than that of a Pakistani or Indian.

Clemancy to Sarbjit by U N Han on 20 Mar 2008

All efforts should be made to save an innocent Indian life. It is however a distant possibility that Pakistan may agree to grant clemency and free Sarbjit Singh, provided there is a reciprocal arrangement. But such an arangement will lead to a dangerous situation where Pakistan would arrest innocent Indians and demand exchange of Pak terrorists detained in India.

Sarabjit's lease of Life by Ashok Mehdiratta on 20 Mar 2008

While going through the comments of our esteemed readers it pains to note that we are still divided over religious sects. Those fighting for AfzalGuru please realize that despite allegations by various groups Govt is taking all actions within the preview of law to ensure that no injustice is done to him.Even President cannot grant him clemency without referring to legal experts. While a Military ruler can take arbitrary dicision, a civ President will never do this.Soplease do not bring religion in to this argument. We are grateful to Indian Govt to have taken up the issue and got relief for Sarabjit and now we should proceed diplomatically to get him released.Afzal Guru cannot be linked with this.isse

THERE IS DIPLOMATIC ADVANTAGE IN SPARING THEIR LIVES AND LETTING THEM GO by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 20 Mar 2008

Nearly two decades after they were sentenced to death for murder and sabotage committed in Zimbabwe for the South African apartheid government, three ailing prisoners were pardoned by President Robert Mugabe. Kevin Woods, 53, Michael Smith, 53, and Philip Conjwayo, 73, walked out of Harare central prison on a Saturday into the bright winter sunshine. They had spent 19 years in Zimbabwe's grim Chikurubi maximum security prison, from where they were moved the previous year. Woods and Smith immediately drove to South Africa, where Woods's wife and children now live, while Conjwayo chose to remain in Zimbabwe. It was not clear why Mugabe suddenly had a change of heart. For years he had rejected the pleas of then-president Nelson Mandela and Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu and many others to release "The Harare Three". Will Musharaff have a change of heart too like Mugabe? ------ considering that these prisoners have been held for such a long time and have had their punishments.

Get Real by Bharatiya on 20 Mar 2008

Kashmiri..Get your facts right. Afzal has been convicted by the supreme court of India and his clemency petition was turned down by president Kalam. This clearly indicates that he was a culprit. What evidence you have to suggest that he was innocent? And if all the judges in the Indian justice system serve their masters in RSS then how come the best bakery verdict rightfully went in favour of the victims? How come the Biliki bano rapists were rightfully convicted? In India a judge in a court has to abide by the constituion and IPC..Even if they want to, they cannot give a judgement favouring any specific group. If they do that then it can be challenged, even by people like you. You are confusing the politico-sanghi connection here in the with the justice system. And that is wrong. Agreed there have been instances of delay and miscarriage but they are not specific to riot related ones. They are across ALL cases. That is a differnt problem.

Sarabjit by Ahmed on 19 Mar 2008

Sarabjit is not a spy. He is a terrorist who exploded bombs in pakistan and killed innocent people. I do not know what afzal guru did but as per below post, he is a spy.

So be it by Tapas on 19 Mar 2008

Afzal guru should hang the day after Sarabjit is hanged. Both are spies and this is the end which awaits them. They knew this is how it would be when they both agreed to work for their respective countries. Both would be martyrs in their own countries. So what is there to shout about. After all we are at war.

It’s the time to settle among the countries of the World at large diplomatically once for all by Balbir Singh Sooch, Advocate, Ludhiana; on 19 Mar 2008

It’s the time to settle between the two countries and the countries of the World at large diplomatically once for all as to how far the nations should allow harmful spying and interference for causing destruction and disturbance within and outside the territories concerned if the case of Sarabjit Singh falls within that category? The citizen(s), soldiers, men of secret agencies from any side is/are not be taken alone in isolation as culprits or accused for any inhuman act done while performing assigned task during the course of duties in the modern moving forward society for maintaining peace in the World.

To Kashmiri by Bharatiya on 19 Mar 2008

To Kashmiri who is comparing Afzal with Sarabjit... Afzal has been sentenced by Indian court of justice whereas Sarbjit was sentenced by Pakistani military court. There lies the difference. I will always trust the decision of an independent judiciary like Indian justice system than a corrupt, hate preaching mullah ridden Pakistani military court. Whether Afzal should be hanged for his dumbheadedness or not is a differnt issue but the two situations are simply not comparable. Personally I do not support hanging of this idiot Afzal even when he has betryed his nation as I don't want airheads like you to make a fake martyr of him.. But as I said.. that is entirely a differnt discussion.

To Bhartiya by Kashmiri on 19 Mar 2008

Which Judiciary you are talking about where it takes ages to settle one civil and criminal cases. Where half the judges are sitting to serve the RSS masters and half being gagged and infuenced to give judgement against the Muslims. When it came to Bomb blast and Sanjay Dutt case it was disposed off and judgement passed convicting and sentencing the Muslims in record time where as the people who are perpetrators of riots are still roaming scot free. Even the civil cases takes minimum 15 years to get right judgement which in the interim are either hushed up or thrown into dustbin. Coming to Afzal Guru, He is still not being convicted and proved to have carried out the attack on the parliament. As far as we know he is innocent professor who teaches in a University and has been falsely implicated. Where as Sarabjit has being convicted and the eye witnesses have seen him placing the bomb in Lahore and Multan market place. So pls do not compare Sarabjit with Afzal Guru.

Should Pakistan hold Sarabjit to prevent Sangh Parivar's appetite for Afzal's Blood? by Khan Sahab on 19 Mar 2008

I think Sarabjit is a prime example of Sangh Parivar's hypocrisy - which treats blood of hindu differently from that of blood of a muslim. What if Afzal Guru was a Kashmiri pandit? Would Sangh parivar pursue his hanging as vigorously? Will they make hanging of a person charged by circumstantial evidence, a political issue, had it been a hindu blood?

Terrorism should be dealt with iron hand by Bhasker Rao on 19 Mar 2008

Terrorism of all form and shape should be punishable and there should be no difference of opinion on that issue. Dealt terrorism with iron hand and this should be policy of both countries.

Give and take by Syed Zainulabedin on 19 Mar 2008

What about justice and pardon to Afzal Guru. He was accused and convicted in terrorist activities like Sarabjit Singh in Lahore. Indian government should show some gesture.

Don't compare apples with oranges. by sw on 19 Mar 2008

You are comparing an apple with an orange. Afzal is an Indian national who has betrayed his country. On the contrary Sarbjit, even if you accept for a moment that he is not innocent and actually did what the Pakistani military say he does, is also an Indian national. Your suggestin therefore does not have any logic.

Dont compare apples with oranges by Kashmiri on 19 Mar 2008

Has it been proved that Afzal Guru is a convict who carried out the attack on the Indian Parliament. May be he is wrongly implicated by Indian Govt like sarabjit by the Pakistan govt. If he is really convicted then why Indian Govt is dragging its foot to hang him??

Sarabjit's execution stayed till April 30 by Pramod Patil Sangli. on 19 Mar 2008

Great work done by Pakistan Government. But still need absolute reprieve for Sarabjit. Does BJP really want to save Sarabjit or has to make only political profits. If she has so she wouldn't have made such shallow politics. Any one with little sense of workings of polities will know that the genuine way to save Sarabjit is to request Sovereign Pak Govt. and not intimidate them. We have to pursue Pak Govt to reprieve Sarabjit at the same time not to hurt their ego as the Pak Govt itself will be backlashed by its own extremist fringes.

Kashmir by Kashmiri on 19 Mar 2008

Kashmir was called another heaven on earth. The Indian army has made it hell by killing innocent Kashmiris and creating insurgency. Earlier Kashmiris were peace loving and timid people. The Indian army has forced them to pick up arms and fight for their right. You talk about economic prosperity in India, go and see the streets of Mumbai, Delhi and other parts of India. People are still leaving in abject poverty and inhumane condition. Not even the dog will leave in those dark holes. Where is the basic infracstructure in India. You do not even hv proper roads to run your cars. Even less developed countries viz Sri lanka is better than India. First develop the other parts of India and then think about Kashmir which was a heaven and will remain a heavan after independence.

Kashmiri by Anant on 19 Mar 2008

To add to Inder's comment. If Kashmiri were a rational and an intelligent man he would have realised that no one in their right mind would like to join Pakistan where life has no value and they are in a terrible mess as a country. I am afraid Kashmiri only talks from Islamic view rather than as a fair minded person.

Value for life by Kashmiri on 19 Mar 2008

Do Indian citizen hv value. If an American citizen get caught in any war torn region they arrange to airlift them immediately. When an arab die in an accident the person who commits an accident and kill the person has to pay blood money. In India so many people die like cats and dogs. Do they hv value for their life. Even I am afraid that Hindus in India talk from Hindu point of view than a fair minded people.

Pardoning the prisoners by Kashmiri on 19 Mar 2008

Pakistan has been magnanimous in showing leniency to Kashmir singh and Sarabjit singh who were arrested on charges of spionage and bomb blast in Pakistan. Can India show the same magnamity and leniency to Afzal Guru and other Kashimiri freedom fighters??

pardoning the prisoners by lany on 19 Mar 2008

I agree if any one from pakistan is captured here in india with similar charges Then RSS compound would have baked their cake on his brave,do any one of us think that Azfal is wrongly convicted just like Sarabjit.
