The police have arrested at least 24 people and have registered FIRs against both the groups.
Tension mounted in the village this morning when over a dozen people from Amritsar reached the village and tried to raise a boundary wall around eight marla of land located near a temple, villagers said.
When sarpanch Gurdayal Singh tried to stop them from raising the wall, he was hit with a rod on his left leg. The scene turned into a battleground when the villagers trying to save the sarpanch clashed with the rival group.
Both sides used swords, iron rods and sticks besides throwing stones at each other, the police said.
The situation was brought under control only after a police team reached the spot. Those injured in the clash were later admitted to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector-16.
Station House Officer, Sector 11, Inspector Ramesh, told Newsline that one Sukhjeet Kaur, mother of Chand Pal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, had bought the land in 1994 and had got it registered in her name.
“Today, Chand Pal Singh along with around two dozen people arrived in the village to raise a boundary wall. But they were stopped by Sarpanch Gurdayal Singh, who claims that the land belongs to him as he has the power of attorney. We are now investigating the conflicting claims,” said the police officer.
