Dubai In what is claimed to be the world's first divorce by text message, a Saudi man has snapped nuptial ties with his wife by sending an SMS.

The man was in Iraq when he set the legal precedent by sending the SMS, informing his wife that she was no longer his spouse, and followed up with phone calls to his two relatives, confirming the split, the 'Arab News' reported.

A court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah finalised the split after summoning the two relatives to check whether they had received word of the husband's intention.

Saudi Arabia practises a strict form of Islamic Sharia law, under which a man could divorce his wife by simply saying "I divorce you" three times. And, the Saudi man sent the same in writing to his wife to divorce her.

The Saudi man was in Iraq to participate in "what he described as 'jihad'," according to the newspaper. Many Saudis have gone to fight with al Qaeda terrorists against the Iraqi government and US forces.

Telephonic Divorce is Ineffective under Islamic Law by paluvakka on 19 Apr 2009

It is simple nonsense and an absurdity that a man can use SMS or telephone message of any sort to divorce his wife. A man should satisfy the Masjid officials or the court ugh legally acceptable evidence to effectively dissolve a marriage. Talaq must be properly pronounced and strictly carried out according to the procedures described by the Islamic laws and jurisprudence. According to a very authentic tradition of the Messenger of God (peace be on him) the one thing that God has permitted but that He hates the most is a man divorcing his wife. And doing it playfully and casually using the modern IT gadgets is totally unacceptable as per the strict Islamic laws.

Where the Islam heading towards.? by Shaik Abdul Samad on 15 Apr 2009

What shame ! If, a man can get ridoff his wife by just a mere a SMS,Then what is the meaing of marriage? In Muslims Men can decide any thing for their benifit, and the women has nothing. How shame it is. Muslims cannot survive without enjoying moderate life style,They say donot follow the western life, and oppose the English speaking people. but, they can use the ENGLISH made weapons, and all kinds of technology for their happy life style. Can We muslims prove that, we superior to any western society, I mean by not using any modern life style and following the conventional Islam life?I personally feel, it is impossible.
