Kolkata, October 11 The Save Nano Committee set up by farmers and businessmen in Singur has pinned all hopes on Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi for bringing back the Tatas. A dharna urging the Tatas to come back to Singur began on Saturday.

Members of the committee will meet the Governor on Monday to request him to step in and save the situation. Sadai Koley, secretary of the newly-formed committee, said they had sought an appointment from the Governor a few days ago, to which he has responded.

“The Governor responded to our appeal and agreed to meet us. We will meet him on Monday evening and request him to ensure that the Nano plant stays in Singur. He had initiated a tripartite meeting to address the Singur impasse. We want a similar initiative from him to save the Nano project.”

Koley said the committee members are also willing to meet Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to request the same. “In the interest of the state, it is the duty of all political parties to stop the Tatas from shifting the Nano plant. We hope Banerjee will agree to talk to us,” Koley added.

The committee comprising local unemployed youths, contractors, intellectuals and students had organised a rally at Beraberi — the stronghold of Trinamool Congress backed Singur Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee — on Friday and urged people to support their movement to convince Ratan Tata to change his mind.

“We will organise similar rallies at various other places in Singur,” Koley said.

The Save Nano Committee has put up a camp at Ratanpur Crossing near gate number one of the Nano plant demanding that the project be constructed at Singur. “It was most unfortunate for all of us that Ratan Tata had decided to shift the project from Singur at a time when almost 90 per cent of the work was complete. We are trying our best to persuade him to return,” the agitators said.
