Scarlett Murder: 'Putting India in negative light is ridiculous'

London, March 14: British media which is giving blanket coverage to the murder of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling in Goa has drawn flak for its negative reporting deriding India and the coastal state, with angry readers accusing it of making too much of the case.

Many readers point out that the Indian news media do not pass similar judgments on British society when Indian citizens die in Britain.

Responding to a piece in The Times titled “Beware the Dangers of Goa”, reader Sarah Quinlan wrote from Munich: “What a ridiculous article. How such an article has spawned from over a tourist’s (supposed) murder is beyond me. I’m sure Indians (amongst other nationalities) have been murdered in Britain - Indian’s aren’t on TV or writing belittling articles pitying the serious underlying societal problems in Britain with tones of forewarning and danger.

“I’m also fairly sure other foreigners have been murdered in India but its funny how the media in other countries don’t seem to have many articles warning their fellow countrymen of the dangers of being on holiday in India? “This article being a fairly clear example of why no-one seems to take British people seriously anywhere in the world anymore.”

Placido Carvalho, a suspect arrested on Wednesday, has reportedly confessed to the crime. Another suspect, Samson DSouza, was arrested earlier this week as the victims mother, Fiona MacKeown, continued to question the police claims.

Much ado about nothing by Kannan on 17 Mar 2008

I feel sorry for Scarlett; poor child but it was her mother's fault for neglecting her this way. Foreign tourists are as safe in India as anywhere else if they don't attract trouble. Goa has become a mini-Mafia paradise but as long as you don't do drugs, you WILL be safe. Most of these Western Goa tourists DO drugs that's why they end up in trouble.

Scarlet case by Rajendran on 15 Mar 2008

It is pity that blaming a nation for such an incident happened in Goa. There are criminals in all the part of world. It is true that some parts of India are not safer for ladies after the sunset. At the same time, the police authority have tried to close the case without charging any murder case in the beginning. Later, more details about the death has been revealed in the second autopsy. Hence, not only the responsible criminals but also the doctor and health authority persons too be convicted in this case.

Why blame others for sending thier youngsfter into flesh and nafrcotic trade! by Philips Cardoza on 15 Mar 2008

The people who break law have no right to abuse others.THe mothe4r ofr Scarlett had no business to throw her daughters to dens of narcotics which she herself was in and for which she had visisted Goa. The British Press is known for such eruptions. Why is not disclosing its Society andn what it is going through. Most of the kinpins are taken nto use of narcotics to help them and turned the youngsters in the racket.

Wild wicked west by Dr Seema Gupta on 15 Mar 2008

India is shown as an unsafe loaction not because of Scarlette's murder but by the obvious cover up and blatant lying of every one in authotity, from the the cops to the CM. When you see the CM/police threaten to jail the victim's mother and fix autopsy twice you have to conclude the state is run by a mafia not the accountable working government. Hell! we in India have cancelled our plans to the wild wicked west.

the mother needs to be arrested and prosecuted too for contributing to the crime for neglecting her daughter. UK is a terrorist and racist country british have done 200 plus years of genocide, murder, terrorist acts and robbery in India.

Scarlett Murder by Anand on 15 Mar 2008

Hindu religion does not restrict any woman. It entitles them to special protection along side elders, children and cow. I want to point to the ills in our society. What do you think of the fair and lovely cream ads? To me it says fair is cool and dark is to be ashamed of. That's racial. We were talking about TN and AP. I am from TN but don't they (TN

Truth if all tourist sopts are drug centres by kumar on 14 Mar 2008

The state government cannot absolve itself of its share of responsibility in the death of British tourist Scarlette. It is a well known fact that the beaches of Goa are the hub of international drug mafia. Drug trafficking involving foreign tourists has been going on there with the full knowledge and support of the state police and local politicians. All cops are on the payroll of the drug peddlers. If U visit Goa U can get it on any of the luxury yachts and will wonder what the law makers/protectors are doing ? Just go aroung Kodai Lake or Kodaikanal International School U can meet innumerous drug peddlers and can get any stuff The Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Home Ministry and the state governments have to devise methods by which the tourists are protected.

100% correct. by Savithri Shankar on 15 Mar 2008

100% correct. At Kodai Kanal, the school and the places surrounding the lake are WELL KNOWN place for drugs and all other immoral acts. I am not sure how many of you had a chance to go Mardi Gras held at I.I.T, Chennai. This is a psuedo Mardi Gras trying to Ape the west. Almost all of the boy and gilr students alike smoke Ganja, use drugs and what not. The state Govt is useless and for fear of backlash it just keeps quiet. This has been happening for decades at least from 80s...Nothing new. Every student in Chennai knows it.

I agree with nautankee by Vir Bhagat Singh on 14 Mar 2008

I agree with nautankee. He speaks the truth.

Here rich man eats when he will, but the poor eats when he can. This is the simple truth. by "Nautankee" on 14 Mar 2008

Indian democracy is clan based i.e.when BJP comes to power then they took bribes for the alotments of petrol pumps, they even took bribes for asking questions in the parliament, and their leaders like Judeo and Katara were caught red handed, but what has happened? Nothing!Even people from other political parties overnight become richer with a fortune of 1400 crore level and the authorities keep on sleeping. In the pandher kohli case, he had to kill more than twenty persons before anyone even bothered to catch him.The justice system is like hawala, it even did not catch the hawalebaaz until now what could the common person expect from the Indian system? It seem if your clan is in power then you rich and powerfull and if someone else is then the they are rich and powerfull, but the common person is left on the mercy of God.

Not true by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

As said, in India if anything has to move in court or in office one has to bribe or has contacts. Thats' why I suggested to bribe the local police and judges to get the case moving in the HOPE of getting justice. It is certainly NOT in USA. I am not a big fan of Ms. Spear. she had her share of legal problems, lost custody of her children, etc..but if such a thing happens in India and EVEN that lady is a small-time EXTRA artiste in movie (one appearnce in a movie is enough) the concerned judge or police would have been dismissed from SERVICE. More importyantly, that cine extra would have been given Bharat Ratna. i was told Rajini Kanth's name is recommended for Bharat Ratna...

Artistes by Rajeev on 14 Mar 2008

what crap !! For arresting extra artistes, police and judge may be getting dismissed in TN or in AP. In mumbai, last couple of years, police have taken action against small time/big time artistes who have indulged in crimes.

TN or AP are still in India or Not? by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

I still believe TN and AP are Indian states unless otherwise you think different. Correct me if I am wrong.

TN or AP by Rajeev on 15 Mar 2008

TN or AP are very much in India.. But please dont generalize this for whole of India

Four Indian PhD students killed in USA by Vikram on 14 Mar 2008

Four Indian PhD students brutally killed in USA during last three months. Did victims families wrote to George Bush for justice? Did British media know that? They play racism even in death. Why white skin life have more value than brown or dark skin? Stop racism and think of human being. In India foreigners are treated as special guests. But when we go to the west, we don't see any equal treatment even. They treat browns and blacks as inferior beings. Enough is enough. We must not bother much, just ignore it.

Indian and British Press by Sridhar on 14 Mar 2008

The trouble is with Indian media. Anything foreign, anything white and anybody foreigner they lick the boots. The Indian press and their correspondents overseas (who mostly spend their time shopping, going to pubs or drinking at somebody's home) do nothing for the Indians in UK let alone doing anything for Indians who have taken British Passports. India media are foreign boot polishers, likcers and chamchas. The same applies to the Indain embassies and their staff.

True!! by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

Excellent observation! This true to a great extent and particularly OUR media treats whites as superior. But unfortunately differentiating people by color is as ancient as our culture so as religion---every thing is based on Color. We are al part of it to be blamed as that was how we were brought up. In Inida a person with fairer complexion is invariably seen as a good person as opposed to black person who is looked down with suspicion.

Black by Ashish on 14 Mar 2008

Dear Savithri Ji,Please dont generalize when you say anything like "we in India" think fair people are good and dark with suspicion. And please dont drag our culture and religion into color issues..Our culture much richer than this. Our religion says you are not your body and not your mind..your eternal..please dont have misleading ideas .I know you understand all this but someone less knowledgeable sees this and he believes indian culture and hindu religion is based on color..I am sure you dont want that.

No you are not right by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

I typically don't talk about any religion. But being a Hindu, Hinduism is BASED on Purely Color. You may ask any one refer to our literature. More importantly even now women are treated inferior to men in society, no family property rights for married women except in Mahrastra and Tamil nadu). BTW, our IPC is based on Hinduism. Ask any leagl scholar....

An addition... by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

Where do you think these castes have originated. please read literature about Hinduism.

descrimination by Sunny Chauhan on 14 Mar 2008

British media did not say anything when the americans murdered indian students in USA. Sarah is absulutely right when she says no-one seems to take British people seriously anywhere in the world anymore. indeed it is shameful crime to kill a teenager but it is happening every part of the world. moreover her mother is equally culprit . how can she leave her drug addict child alone. what would british media wanted to say when we indians enter in Heathrow and treated like a criminal....

Beware the dangers of Goa by damodar shetty on 14 Mar 2008

Funnily, nobody accuses the irresponsible mother leaving behind a minor drug addictive daughter and going out to enjoy alone. Has anybody asked the explanation given by the caretaker person to whom the girl was given by the mother? How can they hold the police or the govt.responsible such irrespoble acts of the mother?

The Negligent mother by Raghuram on 14 Mar 2008

There is plenty of critisicm of the mother in UK. this has happened in print media and also on TV chat programmes except Sky which is biased.I read only some Indians in India being soft to the mother.

Scarlett Murder: 'Putting India in negative light is ridiculous' by Ganesh Kulkarni on 14 Mar 2008

Any other country in similar situation would have sent the people involved back to their country. Why Indian media is patronising them for a few more TRPS though the action could bring their own country in disrepute.

British Press by vish on 14 Mar 2008

The British were never taken seriously by anybody at any time except under threat!!!It is high time the British got over the colonial hang over. It is pity they have not learned good things from their misdventures of the Past. I do not understand how a mother can leave her 15 year old daughter with drug traffickers ... How was she away from school for more than 10 days in the first place?

WE are talking about Indi, Vish!! by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

It is simple; approximately 1 million poor children do not go to school. they beg and eat what they have on trash...so we know what is happenneing in India. You are talking about our children whose parents work in IT, Banks, airlines---yes our childen go to school. We all know that their (poor children's) mother work at home they leave their evn 2-year old child unattended. It looks like you were born in a western country and never evn visited Inida once. please do that first. Go to any village (90% of our population lives) and see whether there is a schhol building or teachers. BOG ZERO...Nothing..By the way i Inidia it is NOT a crime to abandon one's children after childbrith...

Difference in India and US/UK by Ashish on 14 Mar 2008

Savithri Ji,The women in India who leave their children and work do so because they are poor and need to fill their stomach. They are illetrate, helpless and work so that they can feed their child. This woman is educated, has money to travel,do drugs, party and left her child alone. There is a BIG difference. The woman know works in India is not Britney Spears of your beloved USA who leaves her kids for other things.India is poor and things need a lot of change,I dont deny that. The evils that u see in India are mainly evils due to deprivation, the evil here and in your USA are the evils of excess

Your response is tangent, BTW by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

My response was about leaving the child alone (15 yrs) was told as a crime. It is NOT a crime at all...How can one give justice by wealth...Are you justifying that poor people's children have no value attached to their life. In other words, rich mothers can leave their children at home. Even in the U.S one can leave 15 year old alone at home (14 years is the cut-off age, BTW). I am sorry your reply was tangent and not to my point. Justice just cannot be placed on affordability...

Cannot compare by Savithri Shankar on 14 Mar 2008

While I am ot abig fan of Britishers, no one can deny the fact that we in India do not have either law or justice. Of course, we do have police the unifomred goondahs...you just cannot compare them with us in these matters. Unless you live here you cannot UNDERSTAND that. How many of yu know that in the U.S, an accused need not talk with the investigating officials quoting Miranda law or take 5th. meaning 5th amendemnt rights---an accused need not talk or self incrminbate about self. wh know what happens in India. they beat the accused to sign under the dotted lines. Though I hate British in several aspects there is no basis to compare with our police and judicial system...beacause in india we do not have one...

British Media by Bharatiya on 14 Mar 2008

The British media is generally dissmissive of ANYTHING related to India. The good things about India are cleverly ducked and bad things are stereotyped and magnified multiple times often to laughable extents. This is more or less in line with an average Briton's attitude towards India and Indians. Many of them are still having their colonial hangovers (The "we ruled them", "we civilised them" kind of crap). This however should not be used as an excuse to justify the incompetency of the police investigation into the murder case.
