Panaji, March 12: The mother of British teenager who died under mysterious circumstances in Goa has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying she had ‘no faith’ in Goa police, a day after her demand for a CBI probe was rejected.

"I have no faith in the leadership of the Goa police," Scarlette Keeling's mother, Fiona MacKeown, said in the letter released to the media by her lawyer.

Police initially said Keeling drowned because she was drunk, but pressure from her family forced a second autopsy that indicated she may have been raped and murdered. Chief Minister Digamber Kamat on Tuesday ruled out a CBI probe.

MacKeown also accused authorities of colluding with criminals to cover up the apparent murder of her daughter.

MacKeown said she was ‘convinced that there is a nexus between criminal, police and politicians in the state’.

"The administration tried its best to hush up the death as a simple case of drowning,'' MacKeown said. She said government officials had refused to acknowledge ‘the visible nexus’ between drug dealers and the police.

"It was only on my request for a second autopsy that the glaring evidence of murder and the lies of the police officers came on record," MacKeown said in the letter.

MacKeown has alleged that there are attempts to ‘cover up the entire incident’ by showing it to be a case of drug overdose and drowning.

"Scarlette's case is being treated as (death by) drowning and the police time and again have been informing the media about the same," said MacKeown's attorney Vikram Verma reading the letter on her behalf.

"Since the same police are conducting investigations I have no faith in the police," she wrote, adding that she had full faith in India's political leadership that ‘the nexus’ would be identified and investigated.

Mental-slaves by Nitish on 13 Mar 2008

Are we Indians mental-slaves of westerners? Do we hate ourselves?

Re: Mental Slaves by Mentally awakened on 13 Mar 2008

What has nationality or global regions got to do with this? Indian hospitality has been given a bad name due to the Goan goons and their political establishment. It is shameful that the lady has to keep bringing up this issue with so many citizens in Goa who should be taking it up as it is their guest and hospitality that has been dishonoured.

I wish British knew it before 1947 by B. B. Goel on 13 Mar 2008

Indian corruption has now reached a level that only some sub-Saharan African countries like Somalia, Ethiopia etc can challenge us. British would be ashamed now to know how our political elites rule. If they knew it before 1947, they would have given sub-contract to their Indian cronies to rule and give them some specific money/wealth (that they would generate by themselves) while avoiding all British death and other casualties.

british police by vikas panwar on 13 Mar 2008

I think you should open your eyes and you will see the new british police. At the same time i think police did not did a pathetic job. But to say british police is great is even more pathetic. This guy is probably blind.

Are UK cops and people trustworthy? by Man on 13 Mar 2008

Was MacKeown unaware of Indian Social System before coming to India? India is not UK; do not expect things in other countries a per those in the home-country.

British History by Jack on 13 Mar 2008

Yes - I agree. British soldiers have harassed Iraqi civilians by using unlawful torture-methods. Can we trust British police and military?

Stop talking nonsense by B. B. Goel on 13 Mar 2008

Don't talk nonsense. Have u ever visited UK and know how they police and rule their own country? Indian corruption has now reached a level that only some sub-Saharan African countries like Somalia, Ethiopia etc can challenge us. Accept the reality and only then we can solve it, if you and all other like.

I am ashamed by Kavya Dubey on 13 Mar 2008

Dear Ms. MacKeown,We are really sorry for the tragic death of your daughter and really ashamed of incompetence of our police. The overall system is too corrupt and insensitive to give you any kind of justice. We are sorry.

Incompetent goa police by Rajeev on 13 Mar 2008

I really doubt if God police is competent enough to solve this case. This is because their core competencies are in extracting money, supporting drug dealers and supporting all other illegal activities. Goa CM himself is a hook or crook CM..what can you expect from such a useless govt and their police. With this coolaboration, Goa is waiting for bigger disasters to happen.

indian police needs overhaul and dose of ethics and sincerity by harbeer singh on 12 Mar 2008

It's very tragic incident specially when this hapens in a democratic country where people thing law and order is maintained,Reality is that indian police is corrupt since its birth, look small example in trains plice men come amd try to find out where they will get money security is not there duty.one more example go to highways and you will see how police are busy collecting money and no body is there to stop them beceause some politicians are also the part of their share.I hope a day will come when every police men in India knows he has to answer for his actions.God help India to create a honest police force when citizens call for police they know sure they will help honestly, like here people call ph no 911 they know police is going to help but in India no body wants to call police they know they will do nothing and more likely ask for money called in india chai pani.,honest politicians, police officers it's time to wakeup and protect human beings and country's image.

no emapthy? by abhinav on 12 Mar 2008

what is wrong with the police..... cant they see this mother dying inside because of her child's death?

Goa Police by Kushwant sinha on 13 Mar 2008

Indian police is extremely corrupt. This includes the chief minister himself. The PM needs to have an independent inquiry. The PM needs to set up an anti corruption bureau and hold corrupt police accountable.

police station is the epicenter of crime by Dr. Kumar on 12 Mar 2008

In India, police station is the epicenter of crime and judiciary is the epicenter of injustice and corruption. Justice should not be begged but should be awarded. Maintaining law and order and providing quick justice is the prime duty of a government. In a typical third world country, government does everything (running trains, buses, banks, planes, shops, hotels, schools, colleges and what not) except what it is supposed to do. Ineffectiveness, mistrust and no confidence on governance, police and judiciary force public to take law and order in their hands.

Murders must be punished by Vidhur on 12 Mar 2008

My symphathies are with Mrs. MacKeown. Have faith in yourself and God, you will get justice. What you can't get back, of course your beloved daughter. I am so sorry for that. It is unfortunate that for such heinous crimes, nexus exists between criminal, police and politicians of Goa. To me, Goa is a rogue place, foriengers should avoid Goa. Shame on Goa's criminal Congress govt. They are only expert in enjoy power by hook or crook.

Appeal to Indian readers by A Kumar on 12 Mar 2008

Hello,I am Indian working in UK and the other side of story is:Fiona is not a hippy in the sense of wasted western youngsters we usually see in Goa. She is a mother in her 50s, has raised total nine children and all her children have been decently educated. She is not the typical drug addict type tourist. In UK she has stayed in a place called Cornwall a very scenic place similar to Goa. She ran her small market goods shop and worked hard to earn money and support her family. She had come to Goa based on popular notion in UK that Goa is friendly and beautiful place with sandy beaches similar to Cornwall. I feel she made a mistake in terms of trusting Goa and local hotel boys too much. Her daughter was raped and killed, and indeed it is very sad that people are blaming her for the whole tragic incident. Sadly our corrupt police and local politicians as usual playing the bad boys role.Let us try to see a human side to this all incidence and be supportive to Fiona. And by this I do not mean that Indian media should suck up to this story but educated Indians should behave sensibly towards vulnerable tourists.

Police And Judicial Racket by Gope Lalwani on 12 Mar 2008

When the entire racket of Brutal Police Force and Judicial system in India works together in collusion with each other, arresting and prosecuting foreign Nationals on false trumped charges for blackmailing and Extortion from Foreign Nationals at gun point? The Foreign Nationals cannot afford to be detained in India Indefinitely till false case is ended, considering his/her Home,Livelihood, Nationality and Visa Regime Etc; This is the exact cause the foreign Nationals are the Victims (BAKRAS) of these Rackets. I am such victim of Indian Police and Judicial Brutality. Even Non Resident Indians are facing this situation visiting India, in view of their livelihood and home, leave aside foreign Nationals.
