London, March 24: The mother of murdered British teenager Scarlett Keeling has gone into hiding in Goa saying she feared for her safety.

The 43-year-old Fiona MacKeown on Sunday said that she wanted court protection after "stirring up a hornet's nest" in Goa by accusing police officials, politicians and local drugs mafia of a cover-up, The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday.

The battered body of 15-year-old Scarlett was found on the beach resort of Anjuna in Goa on February 19. She was allegedly raped and then killed.

On Sunday, a pathologist's report stated the teenager had drowned after being "forcibly submerged" in water for five to ten minutes.

The report contradicted initial police findings that she had accidentally drowned.

MacKeown, who was accused of negligence after leaving Scarlett with friends at the time of the murder, has repeatedly criticised the police and sought a CBI probe.

"We've been warned by a lot of locals to be careful. We've been stirring up a big hornet's nest here. We've heard that some people aren't very happy with us. The beach is deserted, half the shacks have been closed, a lot of people are losing business," the mother of nine said.

Her lawyer, Vikram Varma, said he was preparing a request to be filed for her protection in the Goa High Court this week and would ask for the case to be handed over to CBI.

Earlier this month, Samson D'souza, a bartender and Placido Carvalho, an alleged drugs dealer, were arrested on suspicion of drugging, raping and murdering the teenager.

Scarlett's Indian boyfriend Julio Lobo has criticized Mackeown for failing to protect her daughter.

Scarlett's mother is hiding, says British media by Derek on 24 Mar 2008

But the main culprits i.e the politicians and the police who alongwith the drug and land mafia will not be targetted in the investigation. The very fact that drugs are freely available and land development in a haphazard way in Goa means support from the authorities who have made millions. It is time the people arose as one and told the government that enough is enough.

Label victim as criminals! by KTVReddy on 24 Mar 2008

Satara-Pune-Goa fast emerging as famous pedophile trinagle=Thaks to few NRIs,hawala money and various land scams.Famous Sahara to Satara scam by vasant/ashok rokade had repercussion as far as wellignton. , her mother Fiona MacKown has been screaming that multiple bruises on the corpse clearly pointed to rape and murder. But cops ignored her, saying the first autopsy established death due to drowning. The incensed mother refused to take her daughter's body from the government morgue. After the report she was going to file a complaint against the police for cover up. The case has exposed the dark underbelly of Goa's otherwise picture-postcard touristy life and revealed a web of crime and drugs involving foreigners. According to police statistics, of the 25 people arrested on drug charges in 2006, 15 were foreigners. The number has steadily risen since 2004, when the first numbers are logged. Even as the second autopsy report was presented to a magistrate, the cops clung to the drowning story. "We are conducting the second autopsy only because we are not satisfied with the first," IGP Kishan Kumar said. The autopsy was conducted by three doctors at Goa medical college and hospital. Kumar also blamed the media for sensationalizing the case and levelling allegations of a police cover up. Worried that bad publicity was hurting the tourist cash cow, Goa tourism minister, Francisco X Pacheco on Saturday demanded strong action against Anjuna police station in charge, Nerlon Albuquerque and doctors who had conducted the first autopsy.

Goa and corrupt politicians/police by Hema Narain on 24 Mar 2008

It is a well known fact in India that politicians and the police are thugs hand in hand with each other. The average educated Indian avoids them like the plague. The Goa government is no better and run the state like the mafiosi. It is time the government in Delhi stepped in, provide security to witnesses, arrest the real perps. and change the image of India, from a feudal society populated by the lawless to one ruled by the law.

Media id media. The would all news which are exciting. There may be a lot of news supporting her. Why Indian Express is only interested in smaller negative news against her. Her daughter certainly did not kill any one. She was killed. Her mother did not kill har because police already has the killer in custody who confess killing. Is mother hiding something? (I did not read this article because it not worth it) May be he was her boy friend, May be she was doing drugs, May be .... Nothing can justify her killing. ONLY court can order death penalty, not IE or British media. Secondly British media is nutral, If it was Indian media, it would try to prove her a nice, straight forward girl etc. etc. like it is doing for a hindu terrorist caught in Spain printing "India gave him a clean chit, but Spain is keeping quiet". IE stop this king of bull shit.

Goa Government and Scarlet's murder by Varinder Sarin on 24 Mar 2008

Fiona, the mother of Scarlet deserves all types of protection and a fair trial. Up to this point it appears Goa government is in the dock and hiding the truth. Why Goa government is interested in the personal lives of Scarlet or her mother? The question is Scarlet has been murdered and murderers have to be behind the bars. Of course Scarlet and her mother have dubious character and a suspicious past, but it does not give license to some Goan rascals, drug maffia and Police to murder someone. How many more postmortem reports Goa government wants? Has the Goa government no shame while the whole world is watching? Where and what the Indian Goverment is doing? Is this the way e want tourism industry to flourish?
