The scholarships will be given on merit to students of Scheduled Castes and those living below the poverty line.
“This is the first time that a university in this country will provide scholarships to students for pursuing higher studies abroad,” Mayawati told mediapersons on Friday.
The university at Noida was already providing several benefits to poor meritorious students belonging to all sections of the society, she added.
“The government has already initiated the process of signing cooperation agreements with several European universities in this connection,” said Mayawati.
Meanwhile, the state Cabinet, which met on Friday, accepted the demand of the traders to waive the interest and penalty on the arrears of trade tax before the introduction of the VAT on January 1.
It also decided to enhance the subsidy on power connections for private tubewells from Rs 55,000 to Rs 68,000.
Moreover, the Cabinet approved the tabling of the Babatpur inquiry commission report in both the Houses of the Assembly.
The commission was set up in July 2001 by the Rajnath Singh government to inquire into the police firing on farmers who were protesting against the acquisition of their land for the extension of the runway of Varanasi’s Babatpur airport. The commission had submitted its report in January 2003.

That is really commendable. One must appreciate initiatives of this government to improve quality of life for socially/economically weaker sections of our society and what could have been a better initiative than government aid for Education. Government should focus more and more on improving quality of education for weaker sections of society rather than reservations in job promotion etc. The main thrust should be on making them eligible for an equal play in today's society or at max by providing a platform for further development such as reservation in jobs. Beyond that government should not play a role. One can not learn swimming without getting into the pool. Lets make one physically fit for swimming and coach him/her on it rather than providing safety and comfort of a boat always.
