Schoolteachers raise pitch in education minister’s constituency

Kapurthala, February 17 Teachers of the state today organised a huge rally in the constituency of Punjab Education Minister Dr Upinderjit Kaur.

The rally was organised under the banner of Punjab School Sikhiya Bachao Manch near the house of Kaur and about 3,000 teachers from all over the state, including those from government schools, computer teachers and those appointed by Zila Parishad, participated.

Sita Singh, a senior leader of the manch and general secretary of Government Secondary School Union, Punjab, said they wanted to gherao the residence of the minister, but decided against it as she assured to meet them in Chandigarh on February 20.

He said the district administration wanted them to sign a letter, promising that they would not gherao the residence of the minister. "But we didn't sign such a commitment," he added. The rally began at 12:30 and continued till 2:30 pm. The district police had put up nakas around the city and commuters were frisked.

Meanwhile, the teachers demanded that the state should stop selling the government institutes to private players under the name of Adarsh Schools. They demanded regularisation of computer teacher and those appointed under the Zila Parishad. They also demanded that 40,000 vacant posts be filled and the long-pending promotions be awarded.

Notably, many dharnas have been organised by the schoolteachers in front of the residence of the Education Minister during the past one year.
