He gives a kitschy twist to everything from Big Ben to Bollywood to spiritualism and has got even snobbish Parisians flaunting his creations at Their Week. Manish Arora, who is back from his second outing in Paris, looks pleased: “It takes at least two seasons for designers to find their bearings, so I was a little apprehensive. But all my old buyers and patrons like Maria Luisa tell me that it was my strongest collection ever, so I guess it worked.”

To watch Arora in action, you don’t necessarily have to be on the front row of a fashion week. For he is ready for his television debut in the very kitschily-titled Adventures of The Ladies Tailor on Discovery Travel and Living March 16 onwards. The Delhi designer will hit the road from Rajasthan to Goa to Pondicherry, giving makeovers to a barbershop in Jaisalmer and his own Ambassador car and photographing the Rabari nomads of Rajasthan and transposing the photos on to his designs. “I was approached for the show about a year back and I thought the concept was great. We travelled for two months and the sheer variety of people I met was amazing,” says Arora.

One of the highlights of the six-episode programme is the quirky makeover Arora gives to his Ambassador. The viewers are taken on a vicarious trip to his design universe as he uses Swarovski crystals and scours Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh for materials. Finally, the familiar artwork on pataka boxes is chosen for the kitschy revamp. “It was great fun!” he chuckles. Like everything Arora.
