Chandigarh Inadequate parking space and traffic chaos were the order of the day as dealers set up the second-hand car market in Industrial Area on Sunday on the orders of the Administration. The experimental exercise was held to determine whether the space available at the new site was sufficient. For the last two decades, the second-hand car market was held every Sunday in the parking lot of the Sector-7 market. In September, the UT Administration passed orders to shift the market to an alternate site stating that the market was causing traffic chaos in the area.

Vice-president of the Car Dealers’ Association, Rajesh Gupta, says, “In Sector 7 where the market currently is, around 6 acres of land is available while the area in Industrial Area is around one and a half acre only. Today, merely 200 cars could be parked in the allotted area in Industrial Area, the rest had to be parked on the road.”

Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar also visited the site and invited the dealers to another meeting on Tuesday to decide the future course of action. The car dealers, meanwhile, said they would resort to holding protests in case a suitable site was not earmarked for them.
