Mayor Pardeep Chhabra today raised the issue of transferring Sector 34 to Chandigarh Municipal Corporation by claiming that the sector was under a neglected condition presently. Sector 34 is looked over by Chandigarh Housing Board and has not been transferred to the Municipal Corporation for maintenance.
UT Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar informed the Mayor that in three months the Sector will be transferred to the Municipal Corporation after Chandigarh Housing Board completes the re-carpeting of all the roads of the sector.
The administration has already proposed to construct a Nehru Centre for Performing Arts along with an international convention centre and theatres. According to the senior officials of the UT Administration, the file has already been sent to the Chandigarh Housing Board. However, officials of Chandigarh Housing Board said they are yet to receive any notification from the administration.
According to officials of the administration, the Chandigarh Housing Board would develop a city sub-centre in Sector 34 as a central plaza on 12 acres of land. Officials said central plaza would be developed on the lines of Sector 17 plaza.
Another important project to come up at Sector 34 is that of multi-level parking. The Municipal Corporation has identified around 2.8 acres of land near the NABARD building along the 34-35 dividing road and a private company is already carrying out the demand survey.
According to MC officials, once the demand survey is over, the requirement of parking space for the area would be clear. To connect Sector 35 with Sector 34 multi-level parking, an underpass will also on the cards, officials said.
