Chandigarh, March 9 The self-financing housing scheme for the employees of UT Administration might have got entangled into legal rigmarole, but here is another scheme in Sector 63 that has again filled their hearts with expectations. With the announcement of the Chandigarh Housing Board’s (CHB) plan to construct 2,080 flats in Sector 63, the board is on its way to realise the construction of over 10,000 flats in the city in the next two years.

Meanwhile, the new scheme is floated in the same sector where the administration was earlier contemplating to build a nine-storey residential complex, which could have been the tallest in the city had it been materialised.

However, with the talks of setting up the Urban Arts Commission in Chandigarh on the lines of New Delhi, the administration changed its plan and floated the housing scheme in Sector 63. The houses under the scheme will have three floors with parking facility.

In all, 320 three-bedroom flats, 880 two-bedroom flats, 560 single-bedroom flats and 320 flats for economically weaker sections of the city will be constructed by the CHB in Sector 63. The houses will be allotted on a condition that no applicant should own a property in the tricity. The other housing schemes which are on the offing are in sectors 53,54,55 and Hallomajra.

The price of the houses would be a crucial issue for the CHB, especially when it has come under scanner by putting a price tag of Rs 32 lakh for a two-bedroom flat a few years ago. With a price of Rs 39.69 lakh for a three-bedroom flat in the Sector 63 scheme, the scheme has generated enough interest among the people.

Realtors say that the price of the flats in the south phase of the city, where Sector 63 is also located, three-bed room flats cost anywhere between Rs 40 and Rs 50 lakh. “A scheme of 5,000 houses in sectors 53,54,55 and Hallomajra will be floated shortly, while one bedroom and two-bedroom flats will be constructed in Hallomajra, other sectors will have one, two and three-bedroom flats to cater to the middle class,” said chairman of the board Mohanjeet Singh.
