New Delhi, January 8: Reaching out to Indians who have been victims of violence in other countries, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh affirmed that the security and welfare of Indian residents living abroad is a ‘top priority’ of the country's diplomatic missions.

Singh's remarks during the opening of the Sixth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas came with the recent violence in Malaysia and Kenya, where people of Indian origin were affected, apparently weighing in his mind.

"The security and welfare of Indian residents living abroad is a top priority of our diplomatic missions," Singh said while opening the annual event of Overseas Indians.

Singh also urged community leaders to develop better liaison and coordination with Indian missions to better serve Non-Resident Indian (NRI) communities.

"It is through such engagement that the embassies will become more responsive to the needs of overseas Indians," he said.

Singh said the gathering of the Pravasi Bharatiya in the Capital has, therefore, a global relevance.

"We can show our troubled, divided, embattled world a new pathway to living together inspired by our modern idea of 'Unity in Diversity'," he added.

The Prime Minister said this message is especially relevant today as we see growing violence in many parts of the world where Indian communities are settled.

Singh also spoke about a clear recognition in India of the growing clout and influence of Indian communities in their adopted homes.

Needed services by Som Karamchetty, PHD on 09 Jan 2008

Here are some things the Indian government should begin to do even if a nominal fee is added to maintaining the passport. Have (group) health, accident, and life insurance coverage for every Indian citizen overseas. Have a ready list of lawyers and public relations specialists available on call (free first hour of counseling). Have bail bond coverage. Assemble educational and job opportunity information with help from countries of residence. Argue for work permits for all dependents of those immigrants who go on work visas – this should help spouses with the ability to work. Work with each country to prepare a welcome package for Indian immigrants, tourists, business people, students, and visitors that describes the pertinent laws, customs, and traditions. Set up call centers in India with toll free numbers to respond to Indian citizen questions and requests for services. Have a log of all inquiries for accountability and performance improvement.

Hopeless Indian Missions by Anand on 09 Jan 2008

Dear Prime Minister, I think I will be dead before your words are translated into action by the ever lethargic IFS brigade. I live in Sydney and I can say that I get better treatment in any government office but the Indian Consulate. I am treated like a second class citizen whenever I walk in there. The treatment I get in Australian Givt offices is exactly opposite. Forget about the security of NRIs, Indian missions have a long way to go even to achieve a normal cordial relationship with NRIs living away from home.

Different people by Jojo on 08 Jan 2008

Security and welfare of NRIs is different from poking noses into others business who have long settled abroad. If they are Indian citizens, yes it should be the top priority. But for people of Indian origin.. its a different story altogether.

TIBE TO BE FAIR. by Secularist on 08 Jan 2008

As a secularist myself, I have condemned any RSS/VHP unfair activities. BUT why muslims fail to criticise those hooligans in their community or foreigners with local christians have begun an invasion of conversion. EITHER BE FAIR OR STOP TALKING SECULARISM. IT IS A TWO-WAY STREET. THANK GOD OTHERISE IF SOME OTHER PEOPLE WERE AT 80% MAJORITY LEVEL, NO SECULARIMS WOULD EXIST IN INDIA. TIME TO BE FAIR.
