Lucknow, January 21 The Uttar Pradesh police will now make extra efforts to ensure proper security for Chief Minister Mayawati during her visit to other states.

The decision came after Samajwadi Party workers, armed with black flags and X-Ray negatives held up her cavalcade near Temari village in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The incident occurred on Friday while the CM was on her way to hotel Babylone from the Raipur airport to attend a party rally.

Following the incident, she took to task all the officials responsible for liaison with their counterparts in Chhattisgarh.

A police team led by the Mirzapur DIG S N Sawat has reached Raipur on the evening of January 16. Besides, a team led by a DSP of security wing was also present. The team led by the DIG Sawat was to liaison with the Chhattisgarh Police.

Sources in UP police said Mayawati even summoned the UP Director General of Police, Vikram Singh, to Raipur to explain the security lapse. “If the police of other states are not able to provide adequate security, you must do it on your own,” she reportedly told the team in Raipur.

When contacted, Chhattisgarh DGP Vishwaranjan denied any security lapse. But sources said Mayawati’s ire was not without reason.

According to reports, the security personnel present in a vehicle that led the cavalcade saw the Samajwadi Party supporters on the road. “But they could not contact the securitymen in the following cars due to a network problem,” said a source in Chhattisgarh police.

The DGP held a series of meeting with the local officers in Chhattisgarh and met the senior officers too. He said the UP police will now develop better coordination with police of other states for a foolproof security cover for the chief minister.

Asked about Friday’s incident, he refused to comment.

The Chhatisgarh incident has gained significance following Mayawati’s demand for SPG cover.

Sources in state government said the NSG (a component of Z Plus security) which provides security for the CM, may send a report to the Centre regarding the Chhattisgarh incident.
