Mumbai, September 24: BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah put the onus on the senior cricketers to inform the board or the selection committee about their future retirement plans to enable a smooth transition in the Indian team.

"The senior players, who can be phased out in two or three years, should make their own (retirement) plans and inform the BCCI or selection committee. Like Rahul (Dravid) had done when quitting India captaincy. Like Anil (Kumble) did when retiring from ODIs," said Shah.

There's been a big debate among cricket fans about the future of the fab-four batsmen (Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and V V S Laxman) as well as Test captain Anil Kumble following the poor display by them in the last Test series in Sri Lanka, which India lost to the hosts.

Explaining further, the BCCI official who is to step down from his post at the two-day AGM this weekend, said it was not practical in India for the selectors to ask a player about his retirement plans.

"It's not possible in India for the selectors to ask players about their retirement plans which may lead to arguments," he said.

Shah also revealed that the BCCI's Working Committee has been authorised by the revamped constitution to review how effectively the new system of paid and appointed selectors is functioning at intervals.

"The terms and conditions, under which they are going to be appointed (one each from each of the five zones) at the AGM (on September 27 and 28), may be changed by the Working Committee from time to time as per the new Constitution," he elaborated.

The Working Committee, at its last meeting, had decided the eligibility criteria for a selector.

An aspiring senior selector should have represented India or played in more than 25 first class games, should have retired ten years ago and shall not be an office bearer of the BCCI or any of its affiliated units.

It was also decided by the WC that the appointed senior selector would be paid Rs 25 lakh annually as honorarium.

Seniors should tell when they are retiring: BCCI by P T Suresh on 25 Sep 2008

Sear Niranjanji,Is this retirement ONLY applicable to senior players? What about senior administrators like you who has been occupying the chair for quite a long time? Rgds

Senior Players by Sridhara Ramanna on 25 Sep 2008

All of us love What the senior players for have done for India. However, we can't move forward with the past glory alone. These days it is agonising to watch thier pathetic form. Before the "quit now" voice gets louder, it is for the seniors to make a decent exit now. Whether senior or junior, the board should always select based on the "current form" not past records. They must set a deadline and drop non-performers from next matches.

Senirors shoild tell.... by Karunakaran Yendapally on 25 Sep 2008

Just as in cricket in politics too seniors should tell when they would retire from politics!!!!!

Elephant in the room by K Sanjiv on 25 Sep 2008

How long before someone has the guts to tell the 'elephant in the room' as Manjrekar called him to quit while still having some respect from his many fans. What is the use of selectors if they fail the country by not picking the players who are in the best form for any given match

Senior leaders should tell when they are retiring by Yogesh on 25 Sep 2008

It is a good suggestion; but Mr .Niranjan Shah should tell us when Senior plundereres/thugs like Rajiv Shukla, Niranjan Shah and Sharad Pawar are retiring.

BCCI and retirement by Kiran on 25 Sep 2008

Indian players should learn lesson from Australian players about retirement. Most Australian players retire when they are still resourceful. Recent example is Glenn McGrath who retired after World Cup. He was the undisputed # 1 bowler in the world. Greg Chappel scored a fabulous century in his last innings. Ozzies retire when they are good form. Sachin should have retired after the last world cup like Ian Chappel suggested. Ian Chappel rightly said " It's very sad to see legends struggling"BCCI should act rather than waiting for senior player's permission. Seems like BCCI is run by spineless baboons.

Seniors whould tell when they will retire by RavBalkish on 25 Sep 2008

Our cricketers are worldwide famous - any average perosn in USA knows Dravid, Kumble and in many euopean countries Tandulkar, Harbhajan, Irfan are household names - so, they are not obliged to tell their plans to BCCI

Fab-4 retiring by Anil Bhavalkar on 25 Sep 2008

AS Vijay Merchant said about 50 years ago - "Players should retire when every body asks WHY? rather not WHY NOT?". BCCI selectors must consider player's fielding ability as well.

Seniors should tell when they are retiring: BCCI by Irfan on 25 Sep 2008

Criteria shoul be performance, not the age.Whether a player is young or old,he should solely be selected on current performance, not on laurels. As long as the fab four perform they should be picked up in the playing eleven, otherwise they should be shown the door; and the same yardstick should apply to each and every player of the playing eleven.

Old Shah by Shwet on 25 Sep 2008

Niranjan Shah has no business to talk about cricket. The Mendis effect has caused a problem to the test and one day series as well, though we won the one day series by mere luck. Among the lot a few youngsters have the ability to replace these great seniors. However, the board official need not have a say like a stray dog and reather maintain some official dignity. Old dogs like Pawar and Niranjan are never required anywhere.

Mr. Shah by shyamal biswas on 24 Sep 2008

It is also a reminder that Mr. Shah should be seeking retirement too. Give a chance to younger guys.

Its all a conspiracy!! by Debashish on 24 Sep 2008

This is all a conspiracy by the selectors to keep Ganguly out. Why the rest of the pathetic players are in like Dravid and Tendulkar..? Dada saved the career of Dravid by making him a wicket keeper when he was out of form and now the selectors are targetting him. This is holeless in this country!!!!

Oldy's by Satya Dubey on 24 Sep 2008

BCCI is pathetic. Seniors will never retire if they do not hink they will be dropped. Are you kidding? who wants to lose crores of Rupees in match fees and endorsements? Senior will go on if allowed. Look at tendulkar, he is suffering from one injury to another and pulling out of the gasmes and series but has never given a thought to retire. This guys body is not supporting but when asked he said to that reporter " you are in wrong press conference" I am not going to retire. That is the story of one. Ask others they will say same.

Oldy's by Bijan Daruwala on 24 Sep 2008

If the decision is left to the oldy's they will go on till 60 Years. BCCI should take the decision!

Seniors should tell when they are retiring: BCCI by Ramanand Gupta on 24 Sep 2008

We want match-winners, not record breakers. We want match winners like Muralitharan, Warne, Inzamam, Pointing, Flintoff, Akhtar, Akram, Lee etc... We don't want either somebody took 700 wickets or scored 50 centuries. Pleeeeease. Leave us alone.

BCCI is powerful by RavBalky on 25 Sep 2008

BCCI is powerful and is in a position to dictate terms with any one

Re:Seniors should tell when they are retiring: BCCI by Sunita on 24 Sep 2008

And how to do expect to win matches without scoring runs or taking wickets?Lol this way you will definitely be left alone :D

Seniors should tell by Edie on 24 Sep 2008

we expect to win matches by scoring for team to win and not like gavaskar who made 36 runs in 60 over in ODI world championship. Result India was mocked, lost and humiliated. Plus if you play for ever boond boond se sagar bharega but team will not win.

that was not good for his record too by bharatiya on 24 Sep 2008

That's is the point. He did not score either. It was not good for either him or the team. What do you think about his batting in test matches, where Sunil Gavaskar single handed saved humiliation of the Indian team. He set records thus helping the team.
