Patiala, February 18 “Punjabis, not only in their own state, but also in abroad need to be sensitised about social problems, especially female-foeticide and the dangerous effects of globalisation. This was stated today by NRI Sawraj Singh (USA), a pioneer in the field of laser surgery and a well-known litterateur, while addressing the media.

At the Anti-foeticide Awareness Theatre Campaign, organised by the National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS) Patiala, the eminent doctor stated that the initiative would help in a great way to check the menace.

Sawraj, who is also the foreign coordinator of NTAS, disclosed that the NTAS had performed on over 100 plays on anti-foeticide including 75 shows of Satish Kumar Verma’s Punjabi musical play ‘Daairey’ directed by NTAS couple Pran Sabharwal¿Sunita Sabharwal in all over Punjab and places in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Delhi since 2001. Now, the shows were being planned for the Punjabis living in abroad.

Analysing the causes and remedies to check on foeticide, Swaraj said the practice was centuries old, prevalent then due to compulsions. These days however, it was there in its deteriorated form, the result of greed for wealth and deteriorated human values. The first Hukumnama “Kudi Maar ¿ Nadi Maar” released from Sri Darbar Sahib strongly condemned foeticide, he said.

Earlier, NTAS director-general Pran Sabharwal while welcoming Dr Sawraj Singh and the media disclosed that the NTAS had now started First Sunday, a monthly garden theatre movement and had given 77 value-based shows plays so far.
