Mumbai, March 17 The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Sunday arrested a servant and a driver for stealing diamond jewellery from the Malabar Hill residence of a Dubai-based diamond merchant. The accused servant and the driver had been working with the complainant for the past 2 and 19 years respectively.

According to the police, jewellery worth Rs 60 lakh had been stolen by the duo in the past six months. The police have also arrested a jeweller who bought the stolen ornaments from the accused.

The arrested accused have been identified as Vijaykumar Ulhas Yadav, (servant, 22), Karansingh Sardarsingh Shekhawat (driver, 39) and Bhamarlal Soni (jeweller, 44).

“On March 10, the Malabar Hill police station received a complaint from Nainaben Mehta, the wife of a famous diamond merchant, stating that some jewellery had gone missing from her residence at Vijaydeep Building on Ridge Road. The diamond merchant and his wife have been staying in Dubai for the past two years, and keep coming down to the city for brief periods,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Rakesh Maria.

“A constable from Unit 12 of the Crime Branch received information that some persons were trying to sell some stolen diamond jewellery. He passed on the information to the seniors and a trap was laid on Sunday at Gorai Road. The two accused, Yadav and Shekhawat, were arrested there,” said Maria.

According to the police, Yadav had been working as a servant at the complainant’s house for the past two years, while Shekhawat had been working as a driver there for the past 19 years. Soni, the proprietor of Soni Jewellers in Gorai, used to buy the stolen jewellery from the duo.

“Yadav was given complete access to the cupboard where the ornaments and cash were kept, and was often asked to take out or put valuables and cash into the cupboard. For the past six months, he had been removing pieces of diamond jewellery and passing them on to Shekhawat who would sell them to Soni. Shekhawat took a loan of Rs 1 lakh from the complainant and he repaid the loan with the money he got from selling the stolen ornaments. Ornaments worth Rs 60 lakh were stolen from the complainant, of which we have recovered two jewellery pieces worth Rs 25 lakh. The remaining amount is yet to be recovered from a fourth accused who we are on the lookout for,” said Maria.
