A week after Naval Chief Suresh Mehta said the project may be unviable for big ships, Coast Guard Director General R F Contractor told a press conference that "when something big is happening in that area like all along the coastline ships are transiting..., so there are security threats."
He said, "there will be security issues that are bound to rise. It is a maritime area, a sea, same sea. The water is same but by virtue of close boundary lines between Sri Lanka and us, obviously the implications are more there."
Contractor said because it was a maritime issue, the Government has taken the views of the Coast Guard and Navy.
"Projects like the Sethusamudram could bring in more security problems... The small waterway could prove a security risk," the Coast Guard DG said.
The Admiral added that adequate protective measures would be put in place once the project is operational.
"Like other channels worldover, a protective ring can be set up to meet such threats," Contractor said referring to Panama Canal, Malacca straits as well Suez Canal.
The project is already surrounded by a controversy as BJP and other Hindu groups are opposed to it and the matter is now before the Supreme Court.
As part of new measures to ward off terror threats coming from sea, piracy in international waters and sea-jackings, Contractor said proposals have been mooted for acquisition of six multi-mission maritime surveillance aircraft.

Apart from the facts like Nation's security risks, terrorism, infiltration, insurgency and foreseen financial losses one can be very much sure this project (if completed)will escalatethe ongoing trouble/conflict in SriLanka into real civil War.This will have extremely bad/negative impact on India.Once this happens this will an opportunityor say excuse to the USand perhaps NATO like western powers to jump into and later to keep their presence for unlimited time.India already encircled by unfriendly countries can't afford to have another enemy right there, which is most important for geopolitical reasons. Moreover, how foolishly new projects are planned while the old exisiting Sea-Ports,Air-Ports,Rauilway stations and bus-stations etc are too shabby and in dirtiest conditions and are shoddily built. Is it not important to renovate and revamp those structure to the world standards? If your dress is dirty you just don't throw it into a corner and buy a new.You get it cleaned and press it and use before you go for a new one.GOI must increase the capacity and efficeiency to handle fast growing cargo for better growth. The money intended/purposed to invest( for which the political vultures of Tamilnadu are waiting for)for RamSethu project should bed diverted to better the infrastructure of ancient old Ports. Not to forget the cardinal reason to cancel this project is sentimental value and religious background attached to RamSethu. We may agree that its not Man-Made and that further ascertains the sanctity of faith of one billion people. To establish or prove something scientifically against such a vast religion and philosophy will be biggest failure of this Govt. This will create uncontrolable agitations and unimaginable damages to the property of the nation. To reconcile old rituals and formularies with changed scientific minds/beliefs is nothing but derogatory to the religion.Hindus don't have to prove or justify for what and how they practice their faith and those who are sceptic are the real enemies not of Hindus but of the Nation, still officially known as Bharat. If this Govt wants to keep peace and secure the nation from within and from foreign invasion it has to listen and value the sentiments of the majority populace which is Hindus.Govt must keep its hands away from RamSethu and other Holy sites/structures.
Rename Ram Setu. It sounds too communal. The best suggestion is to rename the structure as Nehru Setu or Indira Setu or Rajeev Setu or Mahatma Gandhi Setu then no mai ka lal from Congress will ever take any objection. As it is we have so many roads and bridges named after them. Ek aur sahi.
You could have exempted Bapu from that list, if you dun have respect for him then u better shut your mouth.
That's true
On all counts there is a strong case for abandoning this project. More important than the security aspect and doubtful savings in navigational costs is that he destruction of Ramsetu would hurt the feelings of crores of Hindus. In a multi-religious society like India the loss of savings in the cost of shipping, if any, should be viewed as the price of maintaining democracy, the same way as the subsidy paid by the Government for Haj travel of the Muslim faithfuls. Demolition of the Ramsethu would be resented by crores of Hindus as an act of iconoclastic arson which would trigger violent demonstrations across the country. Besides the security concerns expressed by the Director General, Coast Guard and the doubtful viability of the project as stated by the Naval Chief even on environmental considerations the project is not desirable. Let the UPA Government not submit to the pressure of the DMK leaders like Karunanidhi and Baalu who are bent on creating North-South divide of the nation.
It was a stupid decision to go in for the most idiotic project under the guidance of egoistic idiots.Bharathy, the Tamil scholar wanted to bridge Ceylon and India, whereas many fanatics proclaimed, those who are against this project are anti-tamil!Security threat from within is more than from outside
If any thing goes against Muslims it becomes Ïslam in danger", now it is "everyone is agaist Tamils". These Tamil Hindus insult Hinduism, elect a mental sicko who says "Hindus are thieves". Then talk of "Tamil pride". What a sick society.
The naval chief and cost guard director should have submitted their views to their superiors including defence minister and the president instead of going to the press; especially so since the issue has already been politicalised. If these practices are not stopped we may end up like Pakistan, under military rule
