In a separate incident, a 30-foot-long whale shark’s carcass was reportedly found lying on the shore, behind Somnath temple on Thursday. After a spot post-mortem, the carcass was buried at the same spot from where it was found. The whale shark may have died a week ago, said an official.
On October 7, a 15-foot-long whale shark was freed from fishing net some 15 nautical miles off Veraval coast. The whale shark weighed two tonnes. On October 8, two whale sharks were found trapped in fishing nets some 35 nautical miles west of Veraval coast, ie., near Mangrol port. On October 9, a 30-foot-long whale shark was freed from a fishing net some 40 nautical miles south of Veraval coast.
As per official reports, on October 10, three whale sharks—a male and two pups—were reported trapped in separate fishing nets some 40 nautical miles south of Veraval port. The male was 60-foot-long and weighed seven tonnes. Whale shark pups were 15-feet-long and weighed about one tonne. After a six-hourrescue operation which was carried out by Veraval foresters and around 60 fishermen, the whale sharks were freed.
All mid-sea operations were conducted with help of local fishermen. Those fishermen whose fishing nets had to be cut to free whale sharks will be given compensation (up to Rs 25,000), said Vaghasia who led Wednesday’s operation.
