Kuala Lumpur, October 14: A state award to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has stirred up a hornet's nest in Malaysia with local artists protesting the decision saying the star did not deserve the title.

The President of the Artistes Association of Malaysia Mustapha Maarof said Khan did not deserve the award. The Association said it would hand a letter to the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage stating that the award by Malacca state was "irrelevant".

"Giving the award to an outsider is as if certain quarters are belittling the credibility and creativity of local talents," he said adding that local film makers and actors had struggled hard to raise the standard of the film industry.

Khan was awarded the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM), which carries the title 'Datuk' was conferred to him by the Malacca state, one of the 13 states of Malaysia for for promoting Malacca in his songs and films. Khan's film "One Two Ka Four" was shot in Malacca.

The actor was among several others who to get the award on the occasion of 70th birth anniversary of Malacca's head of state Mohd Khalil Yaakob. He, however, did not attend the award ceremony as he was in Singapore to attend a show.

Shahrukh Khan is hugely popular here especially among the Muslim Malays, who see all his Hindi films in Malay subtitles. Khan is also popular among the Pakistani community there.

The award has inadvertently stirred up a controversy in this Indian films crazy southeast Asian country as several people including the opposition parties have already raise questions over the state's decision to award Shah Rukh Khan ignoring the contribution of locals.

Film Directors Association of Malaysia president Ahmad Ibrahim said Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam had disrespected the state government by conferring a datukship on an outsider.

Ahmad said Ali had overlooked the contribution of local film directors and appreciated an "alien" instead. "Why would he give the title to someone who doesn't even know what it means? I want to ask the Chief Minister what kind of contribution the actor has made and we haven't?"

He said the local film directors had consistently promoted Malacca through movies, documentaries and even cooking programmes.

"But if the Chief Minister thinks we have done nothing for the state, then I'd like to call on all directors to stop shooting their programmes in Malacca," Ahmad said. Another artist said the award was a "big slap to film practitioners in the country".

Khan's film "One Two Ka Four", which was shot at the A' Famosa Resort in Alor Gajah of Malacca in 2001. His another film "Don" was also shot in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi Island, where he was mobbed by the crowd. Most of the popular Hindi movies are simultaneously released in Malaysia and have a large viewership.

The art doesn't have boundry, and these critics should understand the media which SRK is in and the malaysian's try to popularise their tourism. They can understand the contribution that SRK did to their land, what they did, they know, we doesn't even know that is there any malaysian movies exist in this world or not.

He is a popular actor but not a skilled actor. People are right. Only filmfare awards him and Kareena time and again, wonder why? And why Arjun Rampal? Have they lost their mind? That is a height of insanity. This man has no voice nor facial expressions, he is so frozen. The judgment is made by ignorant like Farah/Sajids and not intelligent thank God for that.

CONTROVERSY by somi on 15 Oct 2008

did shah rukh beg the malaysian govt. to give him the award? it's they who decided it and now they are unnecessarily creating controversies. in a certain way they are criticizing INDIA.

Alliens by Afzal Sharafuddin on 14 Oct 2008

Malaysian News papers and media has a habit of calling Indonasians and phill "Alliens". A subhuman behaviour is always expressed by the malaysians to the neibouring countries.Mr Khan is no Allien to the Malaysians. He is the most favourite actor for the major population. That includes, Malay's and the Indians. Not because they are muslims. The community is able to relate themselves with his movies. Pakistani community also like hindi movies!! I wish "The Writter" had some ground knowlege about the communities in Malaysia. Request: Resp: Editor would kindly check on the writter's comment on muslim Malays and Pakistani community. The writting shows as if only muslims like him in malaysia. What about the indian in Malaysia did we forget them. What about in India and the whole world. Just my thought that the writter should kindly be clear about the fans of mr khan in malaysia before he makes a rude comment. Art crosses all barriers.Jai HindAfzal Ahmed SIndian

lawl man. first of all l2spell.and then whats the big deal of stating that a big part of the muslim community in malaysia is a fan of mr khan? nothing rude in that and nobody would go exploding their heads over that small matter...but imho the award being given to mr khan was not wrong but just inappropriate. a little too unappropriate to be honest...in the 1960-80s, the award were given to individuals who did some great merits to the malaysian govt, but nowadays it seems that everyone could get the title. and now it seems that someday later, the title would mean very little to a holder because it would seem that everyone could get it easily.
