Chandigarh Almost three months after he admitted to having planned a fake robbery story, 26-year old Abir Malhotra, a resident of Sector 48, was found dead in his house on Sunday morning. The preliminary investigation of the police have pointed towards a suicide and the police have also recovered a suicide note.

Abir had used a dog collar and was found hanging on the staircase with the balcony grill. Abir’s father, Manmohan Malhotra found the body. He informed the police, who rushed him to GMCH-32, where he was declared brought dead.

According to police, the suicide note mentioned that he was very sorry for what he had done and also felt shameful about himself. Sources said that the suicide note also mentioned that since the incident everyone’s behavior towards him had changed.

On November 12, 2011, he had claimed that he was robbed of Rs 8 lakh at gunpoint by two motorcycle borne persons on the Sector 48/49 diving road in broad daylight. Abir told the police that he had withdrawn the money from a bank in Mohali as his sister needed the money to make some investments. Even though the police found many loopholes in his story, a case of robbery was registered. Two days after the incident, Abir’s family got his missing report registered with the police.

On November 15, Abir was presented before the media at a conference by the police where he admitted to have cooked up the story as he had lost a part of his sister’s money in a company and had also bought a car out of the remaining money. Despite having admitted to have concocted the story, the police failed to book him and only chose to present him before the media.
