Everyone talks of women’s empowerment but no one actually practises it. Considering the seriousness of the issue, the police should have immediately caught the culprits and filed an FIR. Also, there is no question of blowing the issue out of proportion as the fact is that the unfortunate incident did take place. In fact, it were the mediapersons there who informed the police. I will write to the state home minister urging him to deploy police vans after every kilometre on the city streets and also recruit more women in the police force.
—Mayor Shubha Raul

The men accused of molestation must be put behind bars at the earliest. The animal instincts they have separate them from the rest of the cultured citizens of Mumbai. It is very easy to blame the police. But there could be many reasons as to why the police did not immediately file an FIR. For instance, they could be busy handling the crowd.
—Julio Ribeiro, former police commissioner

It is indeed shameful to hear of such incidents in a city like Mumbai. This kind of behaviour is definitely not in our Indian culture. But I think the police did a good job. On Tuesday night, I travelled from the airport to my house and I saw police bandobast everywhere in the city. During festivals like Ganapati too, it is the police who maintain law and order. It is common for women of Mumbai to travel late nights. I feel dejected with such incidents. One cannot blame the police in anyway. It is society that needs to change. It needs to respect women.
—Supriya Sule, MP

It is extremely shocking. Two young girls getting caught amid a mob of 60-80 people is a scary situation. I will not blame the police. It is necessary to create the fear of law among people. I think the crackdown against drunk driving has been reasonably successful. Stringent action needs to be taken when it comes to cases like molestation too. Women also need to take precautions. It is necessary to venture out in groups if you have to go out late in the night. I think I would never allow my kids or my nieces to go out like this on the streets.
—Priya Dutt, MP
