New Delhi Clearing the clouds over the fate of his party in the wake of P A Sangma warming up to Sonia Gandhi, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar ruled out merger of his party with Congress, declaring that it would maintain to have its separate existence.

At the same time, the Union Agriculture Minister emphasized that the NCP's attitude has been one of understanding and cooperation with Congress and ‘will continue to be so’.

He said his party favoured working together with Congress in the coming Assembly elections in Maharashtra and "we feel that the party's (Congress) leadership feels the same way, whatever some leaders in the state may be saying".

Pawar, whose party will be completing 10 years on June 10, dismissed as a media creation the impression that the NCP was on the horns of a dilemma of whether or not to join the Congress as the issue of foreign origin of Congress President Sonia Gandhi was no longer relevant.

The NCP strongman told PTI that the thrust of the thought of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru on which the party was based was on ‘decentralisation of decision making process’ and "we believe that you can develop leadership (at the local level) only through such a process".

SHARAD WILL MERGE ONLY WHEN CONGRESS ALLOWS HIM TO BECOME PM by B SGANESH, BANGALORE on 09 Jun 2009

Sharad Pawar has parted with Congress on the question of Sonia to become PM. He will merge only when he becomes prime minister by Congress allowing. Congress has its dynasty people waiting and stooges proposing and promoting. Hence Sarad Pavar will not merge.B SGANESH, BANGALORE .

Pawar and his game plan by shanthanu on 08 Jun 2009

Is there a party called MONEY BAG.Then Pawar will be the first to become the president of that party irrespective of such a party being casteist, regional,National or garbage . He has no qualms in merging with the Congress what if Sonia is a Italian, with Shiva Sen though it is for Marathi Manus, with BJP though titled communal, with BJD confined only to Orissa,

Rules for Sharad Pawar by Niraj on 08 Jun 2009

all write it is okay to think about merging with National parties. And all the parties in India. That why parties creates many problems. Like BJP and CONGRESS. I think this problems solve by using Mr. Sharad Pawar rules.

NCP - Merger with Congress by SVS Subrahmaniam on 08 Jun 2009

It is his right Mr. Sharad Pawar to join or not to join with congress. But the very formation of the party is because of Sonia becoming the Prime Minister of the country. In 2004 and now in 2009, no body could have stopped her becoming and assuming the PM if she wanted, but in the “national interest” she has opted out for it. It is her magnanimity and gracefulness. Now that she has opted out and may be working hard to make her son Rahul the PM- in future, I do not understand any reason why NCP not to merge with congress and strengthen it particularly in Maharastra and conquer there the power. Staying separately they are not going to get any majority of their own to grab the power. On the contrary congress is trying to go alone for power may be they get power in the present hawa. It looks to me better for NCP to merge with congress in the national interest. Better Sharad pawar to think again.

We need less parties! by Jacob Mudanthangili on 08 Jun 2009

It is OK to think about merging with National parties. We have a lot of parties in India and it creates a lot of problems. Like minded parties should join with Congress or BJP. They can also consider communist party too. Local and fractional parties are not healthy to our democracy. In many cases, they are catering for their families interests.

Hypocrite by India on 07 Jun 2009

If NCP merges or do not is irrelevent. He says leaders are nutured from below and can be done. He had his daughter elected and is grooming for her to take over. Since he money base in Maharashtra is slipping he is trying his luck in BCCI which has a lots.

Opportunist And Dual Talker by Chandra Shekar San Jose, CA on 07 Jun 2009

This guy has no ethics and lacks no morals. His garbage truck of NCP will soon merge once he hits a goldmine. Maharastrians should feel ahsmed of bringing such crooks back into power.

Self-respect given new meaning by Hero Vaz on 07 Jun 2009

Pawar left the Congress because he could not stomach the idea of Sonia being his chief. Today, he is taking orders from her. Is there a word, in the English language, to describe such a despicable character? There may be one in Marathi.

Personal ego of pawar by real bharatiya on 07 Jun 2009

Sharad pawar knows that he has no chance to be PM in cong so to be merged NCP in INC is of no use for him.But Pawar
