New Delhi, January 1 The first day of the new year was the stage for a clash between two big names in Delhi soccer. The sunny afternoon completed the settings, but somebody forgot to tell the two teams’ forwards to match up the effort. So despite some decent midfield action by Shastri Football Club and Indian Air Force (New Delhi), any lack of bite in the front meant that their DSA annual senior division league match ended in a staid draw at the Dr BR Ambedkar Stadium here today.

Defending champions IAF started well, with deft work from both the flanks. But it was the lack of finishng that cost them several good chances. They were the ones to make the first impact, however, as GS Sandhu took a rising lob from the left flank and dodged past the rival goalkeeper Subhash Das to put his side ahead.

Five-time winners Shastri did respond, with midfielders Mohammad Khalid and Basheeruddin combining well, but the Nigerian strike pair of Emanual and Hare could not help them get on the board.

Then in the 35th minute, Emanual happenend to be in the right place at the right time, and slotted in the equaliser after a goalmouth melee. Shastri were again the better team after the break, but couldn’t get a breakthrough.

The two Group B teams earned a point each fromthe draw. Tomorrow’s match is between Indian National and Tarun Sangha.
