Jaipur Former Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who created a flutter in the BJP by declaring his plans to contest Lok Sabha polls if his health permits, on Monday denied that he was aspiring for the prime minister's post.

"I had never said I am aspiring for the post and it is a creation of the media," the octogenarian leader said when asked whether he was in the race for the prime minister's office.

Shekhawat said that during his recent visit to Kota he had only stated that since people had approached him to contest the Lok Sabha poll he would consider it and all depended on his health.

"I shall contest the election and there is no ambiguity about it as the people want it and I shall honour their wishes but it also depends on my fitness," he said, adding "I am not going to approach (anyone) for a ticket to contest and shall contest from any constituency as per the wishes of the people".

Shekhawat had created a flutter when he said he had plans to contest Lok Sabha polls if his health agrees amid media speculation that his move was aimed at challenging BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani.

On his allegation of corruption against the previous Vasundhara Raje regime, the former Vice President said he had written a letter to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot asking him to probe Congress's charge during its poll campaign that the Raje government was involved in a Rs 22,000 crore scam.

Shekhawat said since the Gehlot government was silent over the issue after coming to power, he had asked it to prove the allegations expeditiously since appointment of any commission would delay the process.

need for public debates by PM candidates by v ramiya on 12 Jan 2009

it will be a good and healthy politics if all major parties (alliances) inform public, in advance prior to elections, as to who would the PM if their parties came to power. further, these nominees should debate on national issues on TV, similar to the process in the USA. this will help to prevent candidates seeking PM position purely based on their family privileges, and no experience. India cannot afford unknown quantities reaching top most tier just with their recognizable name IDs. who can oppose lively debate between PM candidates moderated by well known media persons in a democracy?. in country with more than a billion people, it is ridiculous to see only 2 names (one just for "Gandhi" surname, and the other one is an octogenarian!) being floated around in the media as potential PM candidates.

What a relief !. Shekhawat should be presented an easychair.

Shekhawat by Vaid S C K on 12 Jan 2009

It was not expected from vetran leader of the stature of Shekhawat. It appears that advancing age is responsible. As regards corruption, it is difficult to judge who amongst parties are more corrupt but where question of patriotism and national interest comes, RSS or BJP agenda rankes highest. So, utterances of Shekhawat on the issue of corruption by BJP and later amended to include congress has baffled the people. Better, if Shekhawat follows footsteps of Vajpayee and observes silence.

not to be pm by sathya on 12 Jan 2009

shekawat is a stalwart in politics and what he wanted was that the allegation of corruption againt raje govt be proved and if corruption has happened then the concerned be put behind the bars.there is no rule as shekawat cannot become pm,he is widely accepted figure across the party lines and the need of the hour is unity than division which will cost the saffron brigade"a media creation"costly

Shekhawat should support LK Advani by GK on 12 Jan 2009

Shekhawat should have kept silent in the first place. By speaking about his canditature he had given a wrong signal to the masses and has lost his credibility. Still there is time for raprochment and he should support LK Advani.

DIE AS A GOOD BJP LEADER.. THAN AN ORPHAN.. by ANIYAN on 12 Jan 2009

WHY DO YOU CONTEMPLATE AN EXPULSION, AT THIS AGE, MR. SHEKHAWAT? YOU LIVED AS A RSS MAN, EATEN THE MAJOR CHUNK OF POWER FROM BJP'S STRENGTH AND AT THE END, WHY ARE YOU BECOMING UNGRATEFUL TO THE PEOPLE AND PARTY? YOU ARE FINISHED, ITS THE END.. DIE AS A RESPECTFUL LEADER WITHOUT TARNISHING THE GOOD IMAGE YOU HAVE.
