Ranchi Bowing to mounting pressure by the allies following his defeat in the Tamar assembly bypoll, Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Monday resigned from his post, shortly after his deputy Stephen Marandi put in his papers.

Ending the five-day long speculation on his continuance in the top post, Soren drove to the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi to submit his resignation to Governor Syed Sibte Razi.

However, before Soren could make it to the Governor's house, Marandi, who had been most vocal on the issue of the Chief Minister's resignation after his defeat to Jharkhand Party nominee Gopal Kirshna Patar at Tamar, arrived in the Raj Bhavan and put in his papers.

"The Chief Minister should have resigned soon after his defeat in the bypoll. Since that has not happened I have put in my papers," Marandi said and left as Soren's carcade entered the Raj Bhavan premises.

"As per democratic tradition, I have put in the papers," Soren told reporters.

The Governor said he would look into the possibilities for an alternative after going into the Constitutional and legal norms and conventions.

He, however, did not spell out as to what options were open in the aftermath of the Chief Minister's resignation.

Soren is a scoundrel but this Marandi is a crook. He fell out of Soren before last election but after that he supported him again. Now he has resigned and again its a fact that he would support Soren after the electtion.

Thank heavens the scoundrel, Soren, is gone. Isn't there some way of keeping rotters like him out of elective offices and public life? The example and standards people like him set are a curse to the country.

Secular action by L Gurumurthy on 12 Jan 2009

In order to take on the "communal forces", UPA (Sonia Gandhi) has to do all these things. The secular action of UPA encouraging actions of Sibu Soran should be seen in this context.

Shame on L Gurumurthy, shame on Us.. by nicky on 13 Jan 2009

Do the adage "The end always justifies the Means" holds true for L Gurumurthy! Thats even more shameful..what a country we are transforming into..Shame on us.

Is UPA secular? by Sudheer on 12 Jan 2009

Is UPA really secular? Then why are they joining hands with Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) which is nothing less than a communal party and Kerala Congress (which is a pro-Christian party)? Is this what the so called secularism of UPA is?
