In a scene straight out of a Hollywood flick, the cellular container, en route Kolkata, lost control over its steering after a technical fault and strayed towards the jetty near Diamond Harbour around 60 kilometres from Kolkata.
The 200 metre long jetty, used occasionally by the KoPT officials, broke into two under the impact of the vessel.
The ship then ran aground due to the low tide. The KoPT officials said that all the crew members at the ship —- 17 Indian, two Ukranian and one Bangladeshi —- were safe.
With the onset of the high tide at night, officials of the KoPT tried to tug the vessel but could only succeed by well past midnight after failing to do so initially.
“Our officers managed to push the ship on water during high tide. They are confident that it will reach Kidderpore this evening,” said a KoPT official.
Later, the vessel set sail from Diamond Harbour around 11.30 this morning and dropped anchor at the KoPT’s Kidderpore dock in the evening.
The vessel will be examined by the KoPT officials to ensure its sea-worthiness before it can set sail again.
The Panama flag vessel “CS Signe” had set sail from the Sri Lankan capital Colombo with a 20-member crew and 6,370 tonnes of cargo before running aground yesterday.
