Kuala Lumpur A suspected pirate vessel that was destroyed by Indian Navy last week in the Gulf of Aden was in fact a Thai fishing trawler which had been hijacked, the International Maritime Bureau confirmed on Wednesday.

Noel Choong, head of the IMB's piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur said one Thai crew member died when the Indian frigate 'INS Tabar' attacked the trawler on November 18 in waters near Somalia, which is infested with pirates.

The Indian Navy's attack was earlier heralded as heroic and several maritime bodies felt that navies patrolling in the region should take cue and be active like INS Tabar.

Fourteen crew members are still missing while a Cambodian sailor was rescued four days back, Choong said.

The Bureau received a report about the mistake by the Indian Navy from the Thai trawler's owner Bangkok-based Sirichai Fisheries.

"The Indian Navy assumed it was a pirate vessel because they may have seen armed pirates on board the boat which has been hijacked earlier," Choong said.

Choong said Sirichai Fisheries found out about the mishap after speaking to the Cambodian sailor, who is in a hospital in Yemen.

"We are sad by the incident and it is unfortunate," Choong said and hoped that the incident will not affect anti-piracy operation by the multi-coalition navies there.

The other ship fired at first by Simhan on 27 Nov 2008

If you look through the incident report, it will be seen that the other vessel clearly engaged the Indian Naval Ship by firing first. It was no longer a "poor" fisherman's trawler once the pirates were on board. I stick with our navy and its actions.

thai fishing trawler-indian navy by kk on 26 Nov 2008

It is sad that innocent were killed because of misunderstang of Indian naval force. I think they should take extra care before they take harsher step. I think Indian Navy should compensate the poor fishermen. This should not stop Indian chasing the pirates.

Ummm why do Thai fishing trawlers go to fish in Somalia? And why would pirates hijack fish boats? by ATS on 26 Nov 2008

Too fishy. Why do Thai fishing trawlers go to fish in Somalia? And why would pirates hijack fish boats? Are the pirates in Somalia not just Somalis? After all, they have hijacked a Muslim ship! And since when fishing boats started being hijacked by pirates? Don;t they have fishing lines to catch their own fish already that they have to hijack Malaysian and Indonesian ships to eat fish? This is way to wierd, the Thai guy who owns this ship must be put to narco test by Maharashtra ATS.

Security is important by INDIAN PATRIOT on 26 Nov 2008

Indian Navy played defense. If shot we will shoot back. Now please hold our lips tight. Why did the Malysian Navy not invterven? So now we should have a policy of shoot and shut up.

American interest in the Indianocean by S JOE on 26 Nov 2008

Indian Navy should be very careful about there current pirate pursuite in the Gulf of Aden. What they are doing in the International waters are against the American interest. American is planning its next war in African. They are prearing the ground for the war, by arming and using the pirates to create lawlessness in the region. They will come to establish the law that protect American interest in the Indian Ocean . Thus they will be able to contain India and Indian Navi in the Indian Ocean. India should defeat the American game plan by containing the pirates.

CHINA FOR HER CLAIMS ABOUT THE SATELLITE LAUNCHED TOWARDS MOON FOR LYING ABOUT SOMETHING ABOUT THE DISTANCE AND ANGLE OR SOMETHING INDIA HAD SHOWN BIG FIGURES WHILE CHINA SHOWED VERY SMALL FIGURES WHICH INDIA NEVER ARGUED BACK. QUESTION IS WHY DO WE HAVE TO BLUFF. WHAT DO WE GAIN? LOOK AT USA, EVEN AFTER REALLY DOING SOMETHING SHE WOULD KEEP QUIET, AND OTHERS WILL SAY USA DID IT. THAT SHOULD BE THE CASE. THIS IS NOT A WAY TOWARDS BECOMING A POWER. NOW INDIA WOULD HAVE TO ARGUE BACK WITH MORE LIES IN EFFORT TO JUSTIFY THE FIRST LIE. WHAT IF ALL THE CREW MEMBERS SEW INDIA FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AS DAMAGES? AS AN INDIAN MY HEAD TURNS DOWN IN SHAME.

Relax dude ! by SoftWords BigStick on 27 Nov 2008

Keep your pants on mate !! You obviously dont know anything about international maritime law. The Indian Navy did everything by the book, so there is no room for anyone to "sew" India for millions of dollars. Jai Hind !!

SHAME!!!!!!! SHAME!!!!!! by RamKrishna on 26 Nov 2008

WHAT A SHAME! THE VIDEO SHOWING THAT THE VESSEL INDIAN NAVY CLAIMED TO BE OF PIRATES WAS IN FACE A FISHING VESSEL WAS ALL OVER THE NEWS IN MANY CHANNELS IN US. FORGET ABOUT CLAIMS OF “SELF DEFENSE”. UNFORTUNATELY THESE CLAIMS ARE NOT BY AN INDIAN PRIVATE COMPANY BUT INDIA AS A COUNTRY? MY COMMENTS ON THE FIRST NEWS WERE – “ I HOPE THE CLAIM BY OUR NAVY IS TRUE, BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY ELECTRONIC EYES INCLUDING SATELLITE NOW A DAYS, AND THE WAY IT WAS REPORTED ‘SELF DEFENSE’ WAS LOOKING ‘FISHY’ ALREADY, AND I ALSO HAVE SAID ‘THERE ARE NAVY FROM MANY COUNTRIES IN THE REGION AND NO PIRATE CAN FIGHT A NAVY, WHY OTHER COUNTRIES DON’T DO THIS INCLUDING USA WHO ARE TOLD ‘TO FIRE ONLY FOR SELF DEFENSE’. WHY WE DO THIS. THIS CREATES A SHAMEFUL IMPRESSION. INDIA WAS RECENTLY CAUGHT BY

As January 26th is fast approaching, everybody is trying to be very active to get president's medals, which is seen from the ATS action and the shooting of the naval force of the supposed to be pirate ship

Ship sunk by Indian Navy was Thai fishing trawler: IMB by V.Muthuswami on 26 Nov 2008

This is typical of many (false) Indian claims to "doing great" even before proper verification. Nonetheless, see what a mature Choong says: "We are sad by the incident and it is unfortunate," Choong said and hoped that the incident will not affect anti-piracy operation by the multi-coalition navies there. If this mistake is finally proved, the Indian Navy should be ready to apologize, compensate those suffered and act as a responsible "emerging and aspiring" super-duper - not like the US bully bombing the innocent civilians in the Afghan borders with no qualms.

Thai Vessel or Pirates in Disguise by Surendran on 26 Nov 2008

What was the Thai Vessel doing with such a huge amount of explosives on board?

Sad by Ramakant Desai on 26 Nov 2008

If there were Indians on board the hijacked Thai vessal, would the navy still have blown the vessal? I think the men in uniform should have been more careful because they are taught that way. May the souls of the innocents dead rest in peace.

Ship sunk by Indian Navy was a Thai trawler! by Tapan Bose( Flt.Lt.IAF-Retd.) on 26 Nov 2008

How was the Navy ship to know that the trawler was a Thai trawler? The naval sailors GENUINELY thought it was a Somali pirate boat. Mistakes like this happen in the " fog of war"!! This will make countries take notice
