Mumbai, January 4 The Shiv Sena has backed Mumbai police commissioner D N Jadhav over his statements on the New Year day molestation incident and blamed the society and the media for the “state of affairs.”

In an editorial, the Sena mouthpiece Samna on Friday said though what had happened was “shameful”, there was a need for introspection on the part of the society. Supporting Jadhav, it said the media, in its coverage of the molestation case, was running a smear campaign against the police.

The editorial opined that Jadhav had said nothing wrong — he had said that it was just a molestation case and was being blown out of proportion by the media — and that the society, which had no qualms about drinking and dancing whole night, should introspect on the state of affairs.

It pointed out that the situation was such that a person would be considered insane if he suggested that the new year could be celebrated in other ways, such as by doing something good for the society or by giving donations. The paper stated that it was not proper to say that women were unsafe in Mumbai as similar incidents took place in Pune and Kochi too.

The editorial blamed TV channels for overreacting to the molestation incident “as there is stiff competition and everything is being done, on the pretext of creating social awareness, to increase the TRP.”

It said the channels took pride in telecasting interviews of underworld dons and for them it was the ultimate truth.

Juhu Molestation: Uddhav Thackeray asks for ‘public parade of molesters’

Four days after two women were molested outside a city hotel, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray lashed out against the incident and demanded a public parade of the molesters. Calling the incident ‘shameful’ for the women and the city, he said if the state government or the police are not capable of conducting a parade, the Sena and Bhartiya Janata Party workers will do the same. “Let the city know who are the people involved in the shameful act,” he said. Speaking at inauguration function of Bhau Daji Lad museum at Byculla, Thackeray said, “The reputation the city is spoilt because of ‘outsiders’.” He added his party is here to ‘protect Mumbai’. On the New Year’s Eve in 2006 when an incident of molestation had taken place at the Gateway, it was the Sena and BJP workers who had protested and raised opposition, he further said.
