Thane has been facing water shortage since last few days. The district has seen a water cut of over 14 per cent and this is likely to go up as summer approaches. Five municipal corporations — Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Kalyan, Dombivli and Ulhasnagar and two municipal councils — Ambernath and Badlapur are badly hit by the water cut.
Though these corporations have separate water supply sources, the main source where these corporations draw water from is Ulhas river and Barvi Dam. The water resource department which draws water from Barvi dam and supplies water to Ambernath and Badlapur. Similarly, MIDC also draws water from Barvi dam and supplies it to Thane, Mira-Bhyander, Ulhasnagar and Navi Mumbai. Besides this, the Shahad-Temghar water project also draws water from Ulhas River and provides it to Thane, Mira-Bhayander and Bhiwandi.
“If the water cut is not done, the Barvi dam could dry up by May which will lead to chaos in these districts,”said Dilip Musale, the Executive Engineer of water resources department.
