Shopian Protest

Srinagar The four suspended police officials in connection with rape and murder case in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian will be treated as accused and interrogated by the Special Investigating Team set up by the state Government.

Accepting the judicial commission's recommendation, the state government also announced that a separate case would be registered against the former SP of Shopian Javed Iqbal for allegedly lying on oath before the Commission.

The report, which was submitted to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on July 8 by Justice (retd) Muzzafar Jan, was vetted by the state law department before taking the decision.

The Commission failed to name those responsible for alleged rape and murder of the two women Neelofar and Asiya Jan whose bodies were found on May 30 but said "there is material on the file to hold, that the involvement of some agency of Jammu and Kashmir police, in the present incident cannot be completely ruled out."

Besides Iqbal, the one-member Commission said DySP Rohit Baskota, SHO Shafiq Ahmed and Sub-inspector Gazi Abdul Rehman were also responsible for destruction of evidence.

The four police officials would be interrogated by the Special Investigating team headed by Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmed.
