Jalandhar, January 23 When Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) team today went to remove encroachments from Rainak Bazaar, they met stiff with resistance from the shopkeepers. The protesters called the local leaders, including Mayor Rakesh Rathore, to the spot.

While removing encroachments, when the MCJ team was moving towards Jyoti Chowk, residents raised a hue and cry and pressurised the MCJ team to stop the drive. But when the team resisted, the leaders reached the spot.

With the interference of local BJP leader Amarjit Singh Amri, councillor KS Oberoi and the Mayor, the drive was stopped. However later, the leaders asked them to remove the encroachments by themselves.

It was learnt that MCJ has already issued notices to the violators to remove encroachments, but as they refused to abide, the demolition drive was ordered.
