Mumbai, August 29: A delegation of shopowners on Friday requested Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray to extend the deadline for Marathi signboards by three months.

"We have requested Raj to give us three months more to change the signboards on the shops," President of Fort Merchants Welfare Association, Ashok Patel told reporters in Mumbai, after a meeting Raj at his home in Central Mumbai.

Most of the shopowners have changed the signboards in Marathi and remaining will soon change, he said.

With festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Dusshera and Diwali round the corner, shopowners need some time to put Marathi boards and change interior of the shop accordingly, Patel said.

The delegation of shopowners has also written to BMC Commissioner Jairaj Phatak to increase the time period for Marathi signboards by three months.

Patel also blamed BMC for the delay in enforcing the rule of Marathi signboards.
