Short, sweet opening for Sunitha Rao

Greater NOIDA, March 18 Sunitha Rao was in no mood to waste time today. She turned the heat on Neha Uberoi in the afternoon of an extremely sweltering day, and the American could just walk away in despair, perhaps glad at being able to win the two games she did. Second seed Sunitha won her first round match at the $25,000 ITF Women’s Circuit tournament in fine fashion, her mistakes being kept to a minimum in her 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Neha got an inkling of what she could expect in the first game of the match, as two stunning forehand winners from her opponent set up a break point, which was duly snapped up. Sunitha hammered on, and the pace of her groundstrokes proved to be a tad unmanageable — it was all Neha could do to keep the ball in the court. The 175-ranked Indian won the first set without the loss of a single game, providing the final finish with a backhand winner.

The second set, too, began with Sunitha picking up where she had left off. Two double faults from Neha certainly didn’t help her increasingly hopeless cause as she began the second set, and found herself a break down within minutes. The advantage soon became a double break, and an unflattering double bagel appeared to be on the cards. Neha managed to avoid that embarrassment, though but Sunitha set up a second-round meeting with Serbia’s Teodora Mircic.

Tuesday’s results: Singles: Nudnida Luangnum (THA) bt Sonal Phadke 6-0, 6-1; Montinee Tangphong (THA) bt Poojashree Venkatesh 6-1, 6-4; Aniko Kapros (HUN) bt Anastasia Poltoratskaya (RUS) 6-0, 6-3; Sanaa Bhambri bt Veronika Chvojkova (CZE) 6-1, 3-1 retd; Vlada Eshkibarova (UZB) bt Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3); Naomi Cavaday(GBR) bt Parija Maloo 6-1, 6-3; Ksenia Palkina (KGZ) bt Carmen Klaschka (GER) 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-3; Margit Ruutel (EST) bt Lisa Sabino (ITA) 6-3, 6-4; Sandy Gumulya (INA) bt Kristina Antoniychuk (UKR) 6-3, 6-3; Sheng-nan Sun (CHN) bt Ankita Bhambri 6-1, 6-4.
