Vadodara, March 21 Even as the city police gears up for the festive weekend, the force is facing a shortage of personnel. Many senior police officers have gone on leave, while many important posts have been lying vacant since the elections. In an attempt to manage the shortage of senior officers, the police have been forced to change posts within, assign dual charges to the remaining officers and bring in officers from outside the region. The police force is also likely to face problems due to the absence of the Assistant Commissioner of {olice (ACP) Special Branch, who is in charge of arranging, scheduling and planning security bandobasts ahead of the festival.

The officers currently on leave include Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), Pravin Sinha and North and South Zone Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP), D B Waghela and B K Srimali. Vadodara Police Training School (PTS) principal, G K Parmar has been brought to replace Sinha, while DCP (Admin) M V Damor, has been provided additional responsibility of both the north and south zones in the city. Other than the DCPs, three ACPs including B Division's R M Pandey and D Division's M D Jani are also on leave, while the ACP's post for Special Branch has been lying vacant for a few months.

However, Vadodara Police Commissioner, R Priyadarshee has claimed that the police is well capable of handling the situation. "This is not the first time that there are so many vacancies. We have managed to bring in reinforcements and are ready to handle any situation," said Priyadarshee.

He said, "An inspector (PI) is holding charge of the Special Branch, which is a very important post. The post has remained vacant since November." Priyadarshee added that ACP D Division, Jani had gone on sick leave, a day after the election results were announced and has not resumed duty.

Meanwhile, another Control Room in-charge, R M Rathod, has been on leave for 45 days. Rathod was accused of involvement in a false narcotics case in 2005, where he and another police officer had allegedly planted drugs in a person's house. The CID Crime Branch is conducting inquiries into the case and is awaiting permission from the Gujarat Home Ministry to arrest Rathod.
