New Delhi, March 17: In the wake of reports that Indian national Sarabjit Singh would be hanged in Pakistan on April 1, India on Monday hoped that Islamabad would be lenient towards Singh keeping in view the "sentiments of the people".

Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said India has "limited options" in this case and can only request the Pakistan government to show some leniency towards Singh.

"In the Sarabjit Singh case, we had earlier also conveyed the strong sentiments of our people and requested for some clemency and reprieve to him. We hope that considering humanitarian aspects, some leniency would be shown to him (Singh)," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi.

His remarks came in the backdrop of media reports that Singh, who is on the death row for his alleged involvement in bomb blasts in Pakistan, has been served with the 'black warrant' and will be hanged on April one.

"We have limited options and the Government of India has been conscious of the sentiments of the people and had earlier also conveyed the same to Pakistan government," he told reporters here on the sidelines of a function.

Asked whether the government had any official information on this issue from the Pakistan government, the minister said, "As per my knowledge, I came to know about the matter only through the media. Formally, the government has no information about it."

"...It is a very sensitive issue. We can only request the Pakistan government to show some leniency."

"It has been our endeavour to ensure that those prisoners in both the countries who have completed their sentences are released for which a committee has been set up," he said.

commando action to save sarabjit by vishal on 18 Mar 2008

Sarabjit singh didn't do anything. He strayed across the unmarked border and was captured. Then a theatrical trial was stage managed and he was convicted. The pakistanis are hanging an innocent man on trumped up charges without the due process of the law and we - the 2nd largest country with the 3rd largest army and nuclear capability and 4th largest economy cannot muster balls large enough to spring our man from the clutches of these murderous goons. Shame on us. Shame on our army and double shame on our spineless politicians. It's a well known fact that Indian life is cheap in India. But now the world knows that an indian life is cheap anywhere in the world because the indian goverment consists of a bunch of eunuchs. It is too much to expect a commando force to go deep and snatch him back. That happens only in movies or countries like America which value the life of their citizens and can go to any length to save an American life.

Hang This Terrosist by Terrosist hanger on 18 Mar 2008

What are the sentiments of people? Release dreaded terrorist Sarabjit Singh and hang Afzal Guru? This is nothing but double standard of the government and specially BJP to demand another country's government to release the terroist and persue the SC orders in their own country. Sarabjit Singh was convicted long time ago and his mercy petition was rejected by the president Musharraf this month. Let the Indian President Pratibha Patil reject the mercy petition of Afzal Guru. Hanged both of them this is the fair treatment to terrorists of both sides.

comment by syed afroz ashrafi on 17 Mar 2008

Sarabjit is almost doomed and the prayer , petition and persuasion by all agencies dont seem to cut much ice as the Pakistan Government has already served the death warrant to him . Infact Sarabjit could have escaped from the gallows but his case has been badly damaged by Kashmir Singh whom pakistan had released on humanitarian concerns and he immediately after reaching home issued a statement that he was a spy in pakistan .He should have excercised restrain and kept his cool . Buoyed by the release and the home coming made him go oblivious of the fact that such a confession will put the pakistan govenment on alert and future cases of the same nature will be in jeopardy . He did not realise that and the exuberance on his part was a bit pre-mature .The pakistan govenment is never known to be sensitive and does what the Indian government never wants . The Government of India should do all diplomatic excercises to ensure his safety.

Do you believe in supreme court's decision? It is a different issue if you are opposed to capital punishment.
