Sibal told The Indian Express: “The Indian education system which is marks-centered and examination-based is a source of trauma for both parents and children... knowledge, like everything else, should be user-friendly, and the acquisition of knowledge should not be a stressful exercise.”
Children, Sibal said, should not be judged by percentages with an emphasis on learning by rote, and the whole system of examinations should be looked at afresh.
“I am thinking of relooking at the necessity of having a Board examination for Class 10,” he said. “A child moves up from Class 9 to Class 10 in the same school and there is no reason for either the student or the parents to get traumatised by the 10th Board exam,” he said. As a first step, the HRD Ministry will consult state governments and state education boards, Sibal said. “I hope to move forward very soon and set up an alternative system of evaluation of students that is based on percentiles rather than percentages.”
The minister believes that it is for the students to decide which stream to follow in Class 11 rather than for the schools to force it on them. “Ultimately, it is the student’s aptitude that should decide whether he or she wants to study arts or science... not the school,” he said.

Look guys as a student of 10th u would very well welcome the decision took by Mr.kapil sibal but as a student or graduate who has faced all these competitive exams knows how important the board exams are.you yourself might not be able to judge urself at tat time these exams tells u where u stand.i agree tat marks not life rather than that the main aim of education is grabbing the knowledge, but as concerned with our our indian education system i agree its not fair.so i end up my comments saying that there should be a change in the study pattern so that the students get interest over studies, but i strongly recommend not to abolish the board exams "THESE ARE THE STEPPING STONES TO TACKLE THE COMPETITIVE WORLD"
1. students talent should be in all fields. We see that the student who had quallified all high level exams with hiest scores, but when he goes for the interview he is not selected. Why? Because he is not all rounder. He has only bookiesh knowledge which he mugged up day and nite. Due to the stress of mugging up he could not develop his personality, he does not know how to present himself. What is the use of such exams. Cbsc should go for training childeren in all fiends. The present idea of Mr sibel are really great. At last he will be know for the great changes. Moreover he is not concerned for the students deeply. Really great. While cheecking the xth class board papers checcking should also be good. 100% results should be achived as per the new scheme. As 20 marks are in the hand of school. the marks which are given in the hands of school should be alloted maximum, to the week students so that each and evey student should be qualified.
sir......m really thankful to u....coz ryt now people would be cursing u dat y have u done dis....but wen dey wil be meeting its repurcussions.....dey wil also feel proud of u lyk me...!!!!!!!!!
indians are doing well cause they have intellect and good education. it was hard work put in which showed such good results. by scarpping the 10th board exams we are going to set back our competition edge
its not the academic pressure but the parental pressure that makes the whole class 10 exp a miserable one. but scrapping boards is no sol.. when a student gives a class 12 boards the torment of pressure that s/he undergoes is heart throbbing. so by scraping the 10 boards ur not lessening the pressure but just handicapping them a leaving them with no similar exp in that cut throat world outside
Mr kapil sibbal!U think u have reduced the trauma on us students????? No! Not at all!Instead U have increased it!!!!
before tis policy was implemented it was seeming cool to us but after this i fell this that this is increasing more stress on us by making it compulsory to mix with co curricular activities .mr kapil sibal you thougt about bad students but what about good students who dont know any co-corricullar activites.and you gave so many power to the teachers wat about if they misuse the power.so kapil sibal you must think once again..............................--sarada prasan das class 9th delhi public school damanjodi
yes i guess its a good plan to be worked over...scraping of tenth board examinations would certainly prove an afresh in today's education system or we can say the very first step in re framing the education system.education system now won't be confined to marks and stress but would enhance the mental abilities in the students
Nice evaluation system taken by Kapil Sibal it is help to remove stress of students.
According to me the 10th boards should be abolished in both ICSC and CBSE board because this promotes tag system.Tag system means that a child is tagged for the rest of the life with the board results. In case if a child is not well and is not able to do well in the boards due to any mental or physical trauma he/she gets tagged for the rest of the life as average student even if he is capable of scoring excellent marks. It doesn't show the exact aptitude of the child and sometimes doesn't let him/her to take admission in the college of his/her own choice.Hence, I feel that boards for 10th should be abolished.
according to me..its going to be a big mistake of removing 10th boards from the education system as 10th board examination not only brings out the knowledge and calibre of the student but also prepare him mentally for 12th boards.if 10th board is being removed because of the stress the child has to suffer from, than 12th boards should also be removed from the education system.if such things are going to continue than their will be a time when there will b no examinations in the country, not even for primary standards thinking about their stress due to exams.
How ironic... On one hand he reduces the pressure on students, and on the other, increases it for engineering students preparing for IITJEE....Is he Confused or what???!?
i firmly believe that board exams should not be cancelled..examinations create a certain pressure which urges us to prove the best of our potential..accepting it as a challenge will definitely boost our knowledge and calibre.and,if someone even fails in 1 or 2 subjects,it doesn't mean he's nt worth promoting to a higher grade but exams should be held to give them reminders of improvement!!
The abolition of the board examination is truly a giant leap towards the new world.Board examinations are an outdated method of judjing a students worth beside they encourage rote learning and lay to much premium on mechanical memmory .Boards have become more speculative in nature there is too much of a chance element in them.....they have become something like a hit or miss game............ Anyways hats of to Mr.kapil Sibal the man of the hour, but sir ,what about ICSE and the other boards we feel left out and neglected .I am 15 and a student of the ICSE board and will be appearing for my boards this year its too late for me but i sincerely hope that my juniors will not have to go through this traumatic examination............ Rasika Islam
grading system will improve the practical way of thinking of students. As due to board exams more emphasis is given on thoeritical aspects which is not at all good.As the main aim of education system is to improve the student's practical thinking...
Dear Sir, No one is talking of this but you should definitely raise this in your channel. Scrapping the 10th board Exams for CBSE Board is the best thing that has happended to the Indian Education System in Years. Kudos to the visionary Minister Mr Kapil Sibal. But tell me is Mr Kapil Sibal the Minister for CBSE Board "ONLY"? Why is he not thinking beyond CBSE, to at least the other National Boards like ICSE? Why should the students of ICSE board not have the benefits of fresh, vibrant, progressive, innovative and new Educational Reforms. Kindly requet the Minister not to leave out the ICSE Board.... Yogesh
I think its a right move at right time that board exams should be abolished as it is too arthodox form of study with lots of tension
students work hard for the whole year and do come out with flying colours run around for admissions and then too hardlucked people like me do not get admissions where they want to. Mind u, i had A1 in all subjects but...the usual story of donation comes up.Whaat is the use of all the hardwork afterall?my fellowmates with 75% or so are seated coollyafter paying 25000\- or through community quota or some such rubbish. What is the use of writing such an exam which is not worth anything???
I am a 10thstd student. I do not think that scraping the board exams in class 10 is really going to benefit the students. This decision would ultimately result in the students being extra pressurised in class 12 as they would be writing their first board exams then.At the same time I agree with the minister when he said that it is for the students to decide which stream to follow in class 11 rather than the schools forcing it on them.
howdy! I’m 14. personally I would Like the public exams to be scrapped. You know you miss so much in life, when you study all day long. The small things which give the kids some fun. When I’m 25,I don’t want to be thinking “Damn, wish I did this with my friends/mom/dad when I was 15”In my school. They start teaching us the portions for the public exams by half of the 9th year.probably the same time next year,I wont even have time to play my favorite sport or to spend time with my dad or mum.You guys dunno what the students are going through. All we have to do is memorize all the answers. At the end of the 10th exams ,you wont know what you want to do and you just follow the group, doing something you don’t want to do?!We don’t have any periods/hours for art…This is probably going to be my routine next year,1.get up2.go to school3.come back4.go to tuition centres5.Do my home work6.study7.Eat8.SleepSeriously?You do the race and you win but you lost your mind ,Is it worth it after all?
boardz r very necessary for children..i wud support mr. sibal on the point that the marks of the board should not be used for giving their stream but it should be the interest of the students to choose their subjects.grading system is a very good suggestion and text book curriculam should be changed because there are students who mug up the whole subject and write but the real talent of the student lies on how much he has understood. if u see the marks are given on the no. of points we give nd the important terms we use but thats a very wrong method of correction. it should be corrected in such a way that it should the understanding of the student. hope my information or suggestion is useful and taken into consideration!!!! :)
dat stupid dumb peson above me...aadith or whteva...10th rox....do not abuse it...gt it?..
i do endorse Kapil's views. i admit the it is a painful system which focusses on "how many marks a child secures" rather than "what he/she knows". this has lead to rote learning and memorization. but if u really wish to reform the education system, then revamp the entire system. change the syllabus so as to check the real intellectual level of the child n include questions of objective type rather than mugging up a textbook n getting marks. students should have options to choose subjects of their choice. this scrapping of 10th boards is not the solution. a child is facing 10 hurdles u remove 1 hurdle, still he has to suffer 9,,so wat effect wud it have?? government shud change the infrastructure n provide guidelines n norms to the colleges n universities regarding admission criteria. a person getting compartment in 2 boards gets admission in an engineering college...wow!!! rather then abolishing 10th boards, bring in a more holistic n an alternative system..
i want to thank mr sibal as the class 10th board exams have been scraped.myself in 9th is facing very pressure...........hats offfff.
